I've received some graded cards as gifts that do not have images on the site. I'd be happy to add them, but when I scan them, they come out fairly blurry. For experienced scanners out there, do you have any advice about programs or tips to ensure decent scans from graded cards?

I think this question qualifies as 'fequently asked', can it be added to the FAQ?
The issue has been discussed at length in the forums, you can see the most recent thred here.

I'm gonna piggy back on Moonbeam's post here, since my question is related to the one he brought up. Also, the link to the thread that that Tom provided seems to state that an inferior scan is better than none at all, but I want to be a good site citizen so I'll reiterate the question.
I don't have a CCD type of scanner that will do a good job on a slabbed card and I just got the Messier version of the 2001-02 Topps eTopps set. I have scanned it and will use the resulting image in my own personal database, but it may not be up to the standards of the site. It is not horrible, just not all that great. So I'll leave it to the group - is an imperfect scan better nothing?
I tried to figure out how to attach it to this post, but couldn't do it...otherwise I'd display it for all to see.
Cheers!
Mike

Are the eTopps cards slabbed by Topps themselves? If so, it is okay to add a scan and include the case/slab. I don't really know much about the eTopps cards.

Yeah, they are sealed with a special holgraphic seal from Topps. My intial scan does not include the case, I have cropped it just to the edges of the card...

Yeah, if it's sealed like that, you should add the case. It's the same as the Uncirculated cards from Topps/Bowman and Panini's Plates and Patches. That's how they were distributed, so that's how they should be scanned. Not the same thing for graded cards.

I had several Ranford cards scanned slabbed as well that were quite blurry and I was allowed to add as temps. I finally bought the CCD scanner (way cheap BTW) and just finished replacing them over Christmas holidays. As for the uncirced slabbed cards, I would double check with Admin as I think the guidelines may not clarify if the slab is to be included. I know all my Ranfords were to be scanned sans slab as it is the card that is important and not the slab itself, that could be added in the Note2 field as a Uncirced Slabbed Card possibly. I know I asked and was told card only, just can not remember who told me, Admin or a member.

I was told to add the case for Uncirculated cards because that holder/sticker combo is the only thing that separates them from the originals.

I guess I'm weird.
I busted my eTopps out and had them be at home with the other cards in pages. :)
In fact, I just added a back scan of one that the original image here was taken from the web (missing the back sticker and SN).
They look better in pages. :) (IMO)

When was it decided to include the plastic snap case in images? And when was it decided a crappy image is better than no image? I've heard so many complain about the top image uploaders and their crappy images and now you're saying it's okay to upload crap. The purpose of this database is to document and provide sample images of the CARDS not the plastic cases they're shipped in. The snap case is not the card. Same as a wrapper or box they come in are not the card. Just another piece of packaging until you open it and put the card in your hand.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.
