There's a small circle inside the card number area with a black splotch inside it. Would this be a print defect or an ERR/VAR? When I first noticed it, I was just thinking print defect, but it looks more like a human error to me.

This would be a printing error, not a UER or variant. It appears that somehow the card number was being printed twice.

Printing defect. Ink apparenty dripped in an unfortunate spot, obscuring the number.
As I write in the error reports all the time:
As a printing flaw, it is not something we catalog here on TCDB. The card still could sell for more than a regular card, but we don't catalog it.

I did find this one listed in the 1991 set...http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/171/cid/77760/1991-Upper-Deck-309a-Milt-Thompson
I knew I had seen something similar before, but it took me a little while to find it. The only thing that had me thinking it was more likely to be a human error was that the numbers "79" aren't complete. I'm not all that familiar with the actual printing process though, so it very well could have just been a printing error.

You are correct - that is the same type of printing flaw, and probably should not be on here. I've opened discussion with Admin and see where it goes.

Sorry to play devil's advocate but: Do you have more than just 1? If there are more with, and some without, then they can be listed. At least that was my last chat with ADMIN and subsequent post.
Once again, there was never a question in listing '89 FL #173 Jeff Treadway's BULLSEYE !
Hmmmmmm, ~Bob~

I believe I just have the 1 copy of that card. I tried searching the web to see if I could find any others with the same flaw, but all the ones I saw didn't have it. Mine came in the high number factory set.

And I remembered seeing a card with that cross hair on it as well, but couldn't remember what card it was. Thanks for clearing that one up for me Bob.
