Okay, so, while finishing that TCMA The '30's set, I discovered that we had 2 different "Sam Jones" listed as just one "Sam Jones." On of them is old time pitcher "Sad Sam" Jones and the other is integration era pitcher Sam Jones.
As I started to work on seperating these guys, I discovered that 1919-21 W514 #8 depicts a "Sam Jones" with the Detroit Tigers (or rather "Tigers"). The problem is, that could only be "Sad Sam" Jones but he never played for the Tigers (he was with Boston during those years). It obviously isn't the other Sam Jones (who actually did spend a year with the Tigers) since he wasn't born when this card was produced.
There was a "Bob Jones" (specifically, Bob "Ducky" Jones) that played for Detroit during this era.
So... what say you? Is this actually Bob Jones mis-identified on the card?

I'd say it has to be Bob Jones (PID 37107), Tiger's third baseman from 1917-1925.  I've worked on many early 1900s sets and they are notorious for name errors.

Tough call to make here, I think.  A quick online search with Google led me to several images to choose from for the Tigers' Bob Jones.  You could make the argument that there is a resemblance of sorts to the card you show, but really the nose and ears represented don't seem to match up.  So then the same search for Boston's Sam Jones leads to more images, and to my eye his photos are closer to the image on the card above.  

Of course, why would Sad Sam be represented on a card with the "Tigers"?

Take a look and see what you all think.  Certainly name errors make more sense than artistic errors for teams.  But those early cards weren't so computerized, I'm guessing, so anything is possible I would think.

That's Sad Sam on top.  The ears look the same.  The pose is the same.  The eyebrows are similar.  The bend in the bill of the cap, and the shadow cast by that bill, are the same.  I think the picture on the left may have been what the rendering on the right was based on.  Perhaps Sad Sam Jones (Red Sox pitcher) and Bob "Ducky" Jones (Tigers infielder) were both meant to be included in the set, and they got the name of one, but the team and position of the other, and the artist was just confused and didn't know what to do, so he put Sad Sam in a Tigers jersey.  Kind of sounds like something Topps would intentionally do in 2016!

Sorry, I posted this three times because my computer kept freezing...

I actually had a thought that the somehow the artist got the script font Detroit "D" confused with the Boston "B" even though the Red Sox didn't do a jersey like the Tigers. 
I feel like there should be a note for this card, but I'm not sure what it should say.
