Hello everyone. At the request of Admin, I am creating this thread about a something that I stumbled upon many years ago, and to this day, I have found no other info about. After opening a 2007 Fleer Baseball Factory Set, I blended it with the rest of the single cards for that set that I had accumulated from retail and hobby packs. As I performed an inventory of the cards for a spreadsheet, I noticed the team logo was different on a card that I had multiples of. I did a search on the net, and came up with nothing. The next logoical step was to see how rare, or rampant, this variation was. After hours upon hours of studying each of the hundreds of cards I had for this set, I was able to pinpoint that the factory set had different logos than the other cards. I have concluded that there are a total of 145 cards with blatant variations, and another 83 cards with slight variations that some people may not acknowledge because they are so slight. I took the liberty of using the TCDB to count all of the cards for each team involved, and will list them below by team. Keep in mind that cards 401-430 don't have variations, as they are Factory Set Exclusive cards. Please forgive me for not posting scans of 228 different variations at this time, as it would take days to scan them all in the same way that I did for the sample image that I provided. Once the list for variations is added to the site in whatever way it should be, I will be able to post proper full scans for everyone to see.

Blatant Team Logo Variations = Phillies 14, Dodgers 16, Athletics 11, Yankees 14, Twins 13, Red Sox 14, Tigers 15, Diamondbacks 11, Cardinals 12, Pirates 13, Braves 12

Slight Team Logo Variations = Cubs 14, Mariners 18, Marlins 12, Padres 12, Rockies 16, Blue Jays 11

First off, wow - amazing that this is the first anyone has made any mention of this in 9 years!

THese are most definitely a valid variation that we should note here. The question becomes, which ones were in the factory set and which ones were in packs? Or was it a hobby vs. retail variation?

Almost makes me want to get a factory set just to have the verification. Almost. Cheapest I could get one right now is $20.

Hey, Dan. I am currently trying to create a spreadsheet of the entire set with detailed variation info so Admin can enter the missing cards into the site. I will upload photos as soon as possible after the listings are in. This process will clearly take some time, but it will be worth it. When it is done, it will never need to be done again, and card collectors all over the world will finally have some info about this discovery. I fully support the idea of someone buying the factory set for themselves, as I am positive that it will be cheaper than pricing each card as singles. I may buy a few new sets to post one of each on Ebay so we all have a general idea of what the free market will tell us about the demand and individual prices for each them at this time. I assume that the Jeter will probably be the dominant card, as the logo variation on Yankees cards is completely unmistakable, but we will see for sure later. We have some fun times in the near future here at TCDB!

That's great that you're doing this. THe only question I raise is which is the version from packs and which is the version from the factory set? (OK, one more question - why didn't ANYONE notice or point this out sooner?)

If these are all in the factory set, and the set has added cards the pack version does not, I would strongly suggest listing this as it's own set, rather than adding them as variations to the main set. For example, the 2003-04 Topps Basketball factory set has different color foil, extra cards and some different photos and team logos and is listed as a seperate set.

To the original poster, I don't think it would be fair for you (as you state the time involved would be huge) to post all you found, but is it possible to get one example of each of the teams you listed for major variation? I'm really curious as to what could be changed on some of those teams. The Tigers have two separate old English D logos on the home or away hat so that is my guess for them, but the other teams I can't imagine what they would be? I guess it would depend on if they use a major or secondary logo of the team in question for the time frame of the cards.

rmpaq5 you were right. This is the page for the #214 Justin Verlander card in the 2007 Fleer set at COMC.

Next Question...Is the orange Tiger logo from the factory set or busted packs? and visa versa regarding the white logo? Factory or pack???   ~BOB~

Those letter codes Fleer put on the backs of cards in rectangles are identical for the White and Orange and the Verlander page Sundevil linked to, HVV4. I guess we would need a confirmed Factory and confirmed pack from any player to see if the codes differ from each.
