Card Identification Forum

I have been unable to find this set listed in the database. I have the full checklist of this 210 (known) cards and would like to add it to the database but I don't want to duplicate efforts.

Like many sets from this era there are many variations of several of the cards (biography back, advertisement back, & blank back). I'm currently researching the set so if I do add it, I add it correctly......but if the work has already been done, I'll move on to something else or assist someone that may know more about this set than I do.

Probably becaue of what PSA says here: "... Cards from this set were virtually non-existent until two separate high-grade “finds” in 1990 and 1996."

I'll upload the checklist. I haven't done a multi-sport set yet and this one looks like its going to take a lot of work to get all the associations (PIDs & TIDs) done correctly and properly list the known variations. I normally stick with football so things like boxing, golf, track, etc. are a little out of my comfort zone.

I'll do my best though.

Check with Admin.  The older cards, such as tobacco, had numerous backs (20+) and our database doesn't have a parallel for each back.  Ask Admin if they want separate parallels for the different backs.

And yes, name checking is a bit of a pain.  The database automatically matches a name to the lowest PID # is comes across.  If every sport had a John Smith, the database will link to the John Smith with the lowest PID #.  So name checking is a one-by-one verification.

C2C...From what I've researched so far, it doesn't appear that every card has a version of each back variation. At least a version of each back is not known to exist for each card so I don't think there is a true parrallel set. The blank backs for example, are thought to be hand-cut from ad sheets which contained only a small number of the cards in the set.

I will send a note to Admin to see if we want to list known variations / parrallels.

Back variations should ABSOLUTELY be documented. Just because there may be a lot of them is no reason to not document them. We don't choose to not list modern parallels that are rare and these are literally the same concept, if not the same distribution method. 

If I ever come across back variations for my tobacco era cards, they are going to be counted as separate cards... because that's exactly what they are. 

I know of at least one member here who is collecting all four known back variations for a set from 1911. 

So, are these really old cards, or are they just something that was cooked up in 1990 to look old?

These are the real deal. The set is widely regarded as the first major multi-sport set. They do have a similar look to to Fleer's "Immortal Roll' insert from the mid-70s and look like they could be a modern insert/reprint that is trying hard to look vintage. But if you ever try to buy one you'll find that they are definately not cheap imitations. Even in poor condition, the common cards from this set are at least $100.
