Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Wait...cards in the "update" sets can just be the same number and back, but with a different picture of the same guy as in the baseset? Just another shortprint?! Here, I thought the update sets that I refuse to collect were, you know, updated information -- trades and rookies who got called up and such (almost enough to make me consider them). I see that those kinds of things are included, but...really, I want two 2017 Freddie Freeman Topps #244 cards? No. No, I don't.
(Sorry, mini-rant.)

I keep seeing these (2017 Topps Update variations) advertised as SSPs, but they are more like BSPs (Barely Short Printed) if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I really like that these are easy to come by, but they are nowhere near as scarce as the variations in past sets. Unfortunately, since we never hear about print runs for these sorts of things, we're kind of stuck.

Update really cut down the odds, something like 1 in 4 packs. I pulled 9 from my box and was a mixture of the Series 1/2 variants and the variants for the actual Update checklist

There are 100 short prints in the update set which came 1 per pack of jumbo and 1:4 packs of hobby and the numbers include some cards from Series 1 and 2. Then there are the 25 card SSP set that came 1 per case. So one case of hobby would get you a set + some duplicates (108 cards) it would only get you 1 SSP. You can tell by the code of the back of you have a short print (code ends in 5557) or a super short print (code ends in 5904)
Personally, I love the variation cards. I think when I display them in my binders and have multiple pictures of the same card is a nice addition. I know that others disapprove, but there is definitely a strong desire for the variation cards from a decent sized percentage of the card collecting population.

To each his or her own. I'm just a bit old school. I miss the days of being able to say something akin to "Do you have the 2017 Freeman?" and have the person know what I'm talking about. Now, that could be any one of dozens of cards. So I could alter the question to be "Do you have the 2017 Topps Freeman?" And that still doesn't mean anything. "Do you have the 1952 Mantle?!" If any collector was asked that question he or she would know exactly what card was being referred to. That made those cards special. Producing multiple shortprints and updates makes each card less special in my opinion. It's manufactured specialness.
And it would just bug me to have multiple pictures of "one" card. A set is (should be, anyway) as many of the players (and managers and teams) as is reasonable, plus highlights of certain achievements or moments of the season. I just don't want two different pictures of one guy, plus a gold, silver, red, purple, blue, and chrome version of it.
But I'm apparently an old fuddy-duddy, which I'm perfectly fine with.
Enjoy collecting in whatever way brings you pleasure!
