Carolina Thunderbirds! A new version of the team that played from 1981-1992. They were in the ACHL through 1987, the AAHL for the 87-88 season and then moved to the ECHL where they won the first championship for that league in 1989. After the 1991-92 season, they moved to WV and became the Wheeling Thunderbirds. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_Thunderbirds
I didn't know a new hockey team was happening around here. They will play at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, which is only about an hour away. I don't know how they are going to make a hockey rink there, but I guess they have figured out something. I don't know why some people in NC keep pushing hockey. After the W-S team moved to WV, a new ECHL team was added in Greensboro (even closer to me) but it didn't work either. Then the Carolina Hurricanes NHL team came along in Raleigh. That's not looking to last much longer now either. Somebody here with a lot of money REALLY likes hockey!
Maybe they just can't stand the fact that this is a Basketball and Football state. That's how we got pro teams for both sports. NC has been trying to get an MLB team for decades, but we have to settle for the (approximately) 30 MiLB teams we have. The NBA team came first, but they also left and eventually a new one was granted. Then after several years, we got the original team name back. The Panthers were a lock for a new NFL team as soon as the NFL mentioned expansion. That was mostly b/c of Jerry Richardson though. He had the background, the drive, and the money to make sure it happened. NC and SC only unite for the Carolina Panthers! The rest of the year is NC universities vs. SC universities. It doesn't matter what sport, but very few have a hockey team.

The Baysox aren’t hard to get out of because they have a huge lot and only use less than 1/4 of it.

I think the opponent had a lot to do with it. They don't usually draw the full 52,000 I don't think. Indiana is more of a basketball school, but the state borders Michigan and there were a ton of UM fans there. I was a neutral observer who drove my friend there, who is a Michigan fan. I just feel like they could turn one of the parking lots into a parking garage and solve everything.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

College hockey is one that I really want to go to, but nobody near me has it on NCAA level. A couple club teams might exist. Ice rinks aren't common in my area. Closest to me is probably Notre Dame, and that isn't close at all.

Spaz, I know the FHL has been trying to expand into the lucrative southern hockey market for a few years now. They played some exhibitions in Virginia a couple years ago, trying to measure interest. No team ever happened. In fact, Danville (the team I go to) might have played a regular season game in VA. I don't know any of the specifics behind this NC team though. In FHL, teams come and go every year. The team we beat in the finals last year is no more. I went to a game where some visiting players refused to take the ice, after going through a blizzard to get there, because they (allegedly) hadn't been paid in over a month. Danville once made the playoffs as a last place team because a team or two folded mid-season and last place suddenly equaled fourth place. It's a crazy league, and I love it!

No NCAA around either. Can’t remember Navy’s league is called, Maryland’s either. Neither are NCAA.

Sorry dude. The Capitals and Penguins are always a thorn in the Flyers side. It was nice to have a win for the home opener.

We had 3 rookie defenseman and our backup goalie in for that game. I like Djoos, but Ness and Bowey belong in Hershey.
