Funny this comes up now. I was just thinking up a design on my way to the NASCAR race yesterday (got bored on the way). It'd be easier to understand with a sketch, but here's the description. I don't have a name for it b/c it would be a base set. It would work for nearly every sport.
ALL cards would be vertical on the front and the back. Design is a standard-sized rectangle card with a thin white border all the way around the edge. Then an action photo in an oval shape that touches the middle of each side. Between the oval and the rectangle border is a spoke design coming from the corners toward the edge of the oval. The spoke design is holofoil. The bottom left has a white circle with the team logo in the spoke-design with no foil. The bottom right has a white circle with the player's position matching the logo side. The player's last name is typed across the top over the inner rectangle and the oval, also not foil. All parallels would change either the white border or the holofoil to different colors and all would have SN's on the front placed on the bottom of the photo b/t the logo and position.
The back would have no border and the card number in a circle on the top left of the card. The player's name, team, position and jersey number would be on top, followed by personal info (DOB, where born, height, weight, left/right handed, etc). Then in a box, ALL sports stats that can fit. At the bottom, a short line or two about the person. No picture on the back at all.
To alter this for Racing, the pic on front would have their vehicle in the background with the driver overlayed in the middle of the card. Instead of a Position, it would have the # of the vehicle.

An insert set called "Bad Blood". It would feature photos of beanballs, cheap shots, and other assorted fisticuffs. On the back, you could have guys like Kyle Farnsworth, Bill Romanowski, and Bill Laimbeer critique the technique of the combatants.

This being Halloween I'll offer up a tongue-in-cheek macabre insert set. I'll call it "Signed in Blood". An autographed set of cards that are signed in blood. A few drops of the players blood mixed into the ink used to sign the cards. <insert evil laugh>

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

If we see any of these over the next few years we'll assume the card company stole our ideas. Royalties anyone?
Maybe the CDC or WHO would have to approve C2's cards first.
For the bad blood card how about Nolan Ryan/Robin Ventura being listed as card #1 and the front picture showing Ventura being pounded in a headlock by Ryan.

I preffer Foreman and Ali picture of the rumble in the jungle as card #1. When Ali lands the right on Foreman's chin. They hated each other and that picture is iconnic.

I used to have that Ryan/Ventura picture on a card from the Pacific Texas Express set. I held on to it for a long time, but eventually traded it. That would definitely make the list for a Bad Blood card, esp. since Nolan's face was bloody.

Another set of ideas would be “Franchise Best,” where the best year of each team would be featured, or “Finally Featured,” every Minor League player who never got a Major League card gets one (this would be a rather large set.)

A revamp of Topps Archives cards that mimic the base design from 1951 to present. One card for each base design. No old schoolers just current players. For instance this year would be a 169 card set (or so...51 blue/red back) and finish up the set with cards that use other topps base designs up to 250 ( Stadium Club, Gallery, etc..)
