Hi.
I've become a bit obsessed with tobacco cards lately. Not that I own many. I've got five. But anyway, I was wondering why the T206 set seems so much more popular than the T205. On this site, the T206s are ranked fifth, for example, compared to the T205's 78th.
And I don't quite get it. Same age, basically. They're equally beautiful, in my opinion. The gold on the 205s might be a bit nicer, actually. And the 205s have stats and wonderful language on the back, along with the tobacco ad.
So what gives? Is it just that the 206 set is bigger? Or is there something else I'm missing?
Just curious, I guess, how people rate the sets.

Can't say I'm a big fan of either set, but the T206 has a Buck Hooker. You won't find one of those in the T205, or much of anywhere these days . . .

I'll just say here that I wish we could edit the subject of a post and that I'd proofread better.
And Buck Hooker is a fantastic name. Might need that card....

But see, that's what I don't quite get. There are significant differences between them, most notably the backs. Whichever it is, it seems you'd prefer one over the other. I had had to rate them differently.
Unlike the 1955 and 1956 Topps baseball, which are so similar, it's hard for me to distinguish a rating for them.
Each to his own, I guess.

Huh. There's an oddity. Found five of these cards on eBay graded by PSA. PSA labels the cards as "Bock" Hooker consistently. Strange.

It's about the bigger picture. Any ranking of less than 10 hurts a set's ranking on this site, unless you go through and rank every other set in competition with it.
You're not just ranking the two sets against each other, but the two sets in relation with all the other sets being ranked. You can easily drop the T206 set below the T205 by giving it a "1.0", but then the T206 set would drop below a bunch of other sets that it should rank above.
That's what happened to the T205 set. Someone gave it a lower ranking, but failed to adjust the other 77 sets currently ranking above the T205 set unless it was on purpose.
No one can say that I hurt the ranking of either of those sets by giving them 10's. They are legendary classics and deserve a better ranking than a majority of other sets in existence. Give a T206 set less than 10.0, and you'll have to go through and rank at least 5,000 other sets less than 10.0 to be fair to the system, including every Fleer, Donruss, Score, and Upper Deck set ever produced.

I find that reasoning kind of odd. I don't give every set a 10. I don't consider all the other sets, except my own rankings of them. So I give sets I like more higher rankings than sets I like less. I'm not sure I gave any 10s. And I didn't rate any set below a 4. But They're all on a relatively correct scale in comparison with each other in my eyes. I guess I hoped and assumed others who care enough to actually rank the sets would do more or less the same. I didn't think people would give a set a 1 or a 10 in an effort to lower or boost its rank.
Regardless, I own one T206 now. The poses are better than the T205s, I suppose, which are all just faces. But I love the gold and the stats on the back.

I know the Gold Border T-205's didn't have as good of an All-Star selection of players. Also, I've read the gold borders of the card were often more condition sensitive - the golden borders chipped a lot.
