...but here I am loading my collection into the database. Well into Fleer products, completed Fleer, Circa, Metal and almost all of my Skybox when I get to what I would have assumed to be "2000 Skybox EX" (seeing as all of the EX products have been titled Skybox EX). But my initial search does not show a "2000 Skybox EX"; instead it has a "2000 Fleer E-X". Once again, a lack of consistency in the naming of sets. This was a minor one as it was easy to find the right set. But we do really have a problem with the lack of a standard and observed convention in the naming of sets.
If there is a priority list on the things we should look to fix in the database, this really needs to be elevated.

For those who haven't noticed; when entering a set there is now a dedicated field for 'manufacturer' separate from the set name.
It will take some time to get the existing entries corrected, and I have not yet seen ant guidance or standard on what should or should not be included in each field.

Is there a way to correct the existing entries? i just checked this particular set and did not see anything obvious.

So, in the case of cards that are technically "Team Issue" SGA types (particularly minor league) would it be appropriate to list the set as Team Issue in the title and then use brand for a primary sponsor (Burger King did the Huntsville Stars for years) or the printing group (Brandt, Grandstand, Mult-Ad, etc)?

You can double-check with Admin, but according to guidelines you don't put "Team Issue" in the title; it's already inferred. The branding of those sets are very inconsistent. Some are listed by the printers and some are listed by the sponsors.
My take: I don't see a sponsor as the issuing/printing company. Those companies are basically paying for an adveristing spot on the card.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

It's pretty confusing. And sometimes, you'll get two almost identical sets, one of which has a sponsor and the other one doesn't.

I would be happy if we could at least get the major companies' issues straightened out. i.e. Bowman, Donruss, Fleer, O Pee Chee, Pinnacle/Score, Topps and Upper Deck.

As I've pointed out before, you have to remember that manufacturers have changed too. Almost every Panini issue (not counting super premium mega-expensive stuff) is an extension of a former Donruss, Skybox, Playoff, Pacific, or Score/Pinnacle/Score Pinnacle/Pinnacle Score brand. "Fleer Ultra" now manufactured by Upper Deck, was formerly "Ultra" manufactured by Fleer. Bowman is a Topps product now. It wasn't in the 1950s. Fleer changed names from Fleer to Fleer/Skybox in the 1990s. All the modern stuff with minis (Allen & Ginter, Gypsy Queen, Obak, Goodwin Champions, etc.), manufactured by current companies, are named after old 19th- and early 20th Century tobacco sets. There is no cut-and-dry solution to naming conventions, because this is anything but a cut-and-dry hobby.
-------------------------------
I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
