1992-93 Topps Archives Basketball Forum

While I was a fan of this set when it came out, and I like the intent behind it, the whole set is based around a false premise.  True these cards rookies did not exist because Topps wasn't producing basketball cards for those seasons, but at no time prior to 1991 did Topps ever repeat a design across multiple sports.  If Topps had produced sets for these years, they would all have had completely different designs.  Topps would not have simply recycled the baseball designs for basketball.

I am quite lost as to what you are saying! I just have no idea what your complaint is here. Topps recycles EVERYTHING and always has done that. I won't add anything else until I understand what you're talking about with this set.

He saying that Topps never used the same card design for each sport in any given year. For instance, in 1984 Topps used different card designs for each sport. The 1984 Topps baseball, football and hockey cards all have different, unique designs. So, a 1984 Topps basketball card would of had a unique design. And I agree with DaClyde, that was my first thought when I saw this set. Here are the 1984 Topps products:

This is one of those sets that I always loved but found disappointing at the same time. Instead of just doing the rookies, I felt they should have produced entire sets to fill in those years. I was not aware of the other sports when I first found this set in 1996. (Thanks to Bobscardz I now need only one card to complete the set)

Topps later DID produce cards for the missing years- but only for Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and possibly Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. They also produced missing cards for Bill Russell that would have been issued during Topps' first break, between their 1957-58 and 1969-70 sets. All of these used the baseball designs, which is fine with me. Like I said, I never knew the baseball designs until I joined the Database so for most of my life it was all new to me.
