1997 Pinnacle Certified Racing Forum

I would like to correct the listings for 1997 Pinnacle Certified, and I'm looking for suggestions on how the final listings should be arranged.

1997 Pinnacle Certified and 1997 Totally Certified were two separate products.  Totally Certified was paralell to Pinacle Certified, but it came in its own boxes.  The Platinum -Red, -Blue and -Gold cards were not inserted in Pinnacle Certified boxes.  In "racing", the Totally Certified cards are currently listed as parallels of the base Pinacle Certified set.  Is this arrangement acceptable, or should it be listed as it's own product?  I looked to other sports in the database for guidance, but that only added to the confusion:

Baseball has the Totally Certified cards listed as inserts, not even parallels.

Hockey has them listed separately, Certified and Totally Certified

Football also has them listed separately, but as Certified and Certified Platinum Red

It seems like listing the Totally Certified cards separately is more correct, but that brings up another issue with naming.  The listing method used in Hockey omits the "Platinum Red" name of the lowest-tier cards. However, the listing method used in Football assigns the "Platinum Red" name to the product, making the higher tier cards appear to be "1997 Pinnacle Totally Certified Platinum Red - Platinum Blue" and "1997 Pinnacle Totally Certified Platinum Red - Platinum Gold".  Neither method seems ideal.

I think that this product should be listed the same way across all sports.  I'd like to hear opinions and rationale for the best method to use.  Ideas?

if i understand you right.. yes..the Cert's are separate.. Leaf has that going on too.. there is the "Rookie & Stars" set with an insert of of "Longeivity" then there is totally separate set of "Rookies and Stars Longevitiy"  with its own insert sets.. they got own combinations of Mirror <colors> as well. i havent really looked at the earlier products, but in the more recent years, i believe the naming convention has been you mentioned.

First, wow - I didn't know it was listed differently across the sports.

Second, I agree we should have uniformity.

Third, I think Pinnacle/Score should take a long walk off a short pier for coming up with this concept. I don't know if they were first to come out with a product that paralleled another one of their products, but if it was them - BOO!

Anyway, I think Totally Certified should be listed separately as it was a different product. I also think the base set should NOT indicate color, but that should be noted in the Trivia/Comments/Release notes, etc. because that will confuse people looking at the sets (Is it red or is it blue?). From what I see, and remember about the product when it came out, I think we have it right in Hockey (I was doing exclusively hockey at the time). We should get the others to match that format. You probably will need to get Admin involved, to move sets, and then we all can pitch in and get the right info in the right places.

This set has been a bane of mine for some time. I know I got some of both versions when they were new but I didn't remember how they were packaged.

I remember one of them came in a can, I believe, that you had to use a can opener to get the cards out- not recloseable.

The Totally Certified cards are all SN, I believe, while the base Certified are not SN at all. I think.

The base set should NOT say Platinum Red, for the reason you posit. That would then make the parallels say Platinum Red- Platinum Blue (and Gold) and that is not right at all.

The same problem crops up in the Flair Showcase and Topps Gold Label sets. The base sets are labeled as Row/Level 1 so the parallels say Level 1- Level 2 for example. It's not right, but that's how it's been  since I joined.

Sorry Billy- the oil can packaging was a completely different set, that was 1997 Pinnacle Precision.  

Yes, every card in Totally Certified was serial numbered.  So were the boxes.  That is what made it "totally"..."certified".  The serial numbering is not in question, the listings are correct at the card level.  I'm looking for input regarding the correct organization of the sets.

Dan - I agree, the Hockey sets are organized the best of the four.  I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any ideas that would make it better still.

Well, at least I had the brand right...

There was a Pinnacle branded hockey set that came in cans (with players on them) as well. Just looked it up - Pinnacle Inside. (That was 1997-98.) I remember, because we had to get the Steve Yzerman cans.

Tom, I think it should be made to match the way they are listed for hockey. That seems to be the most accurate listing.

Dan, there was also a Pinnacle Inside baseball release in 1997. I still have 2 of the cans, opened of course b/c I had to see what was inside. :)

I concur that they should all follow hockey version, as it seems the most sane =) Also yes Billy you are correct the Totally Cert is SN the Cert is not.
