I see the following Short Print listed as a variation in the base set.  Should it be listed as another Inserts Set?

They are short printed variations to the regular base cards with those numbers. Why Topps chose to do this sort if thing I have no idea. They are already listed under the "Errors / Variations" for that set along with the regular variation of the card or the "a" version.

I am about to open a box of series 2 for this set and as I was checking out the checklist, I noticed that many of the base cards are listed as a variation followed by a short print.  

1a Alex Rodriguez  Var

1b Babe Ruth    SP

2a Omar Vizquel  Var

2b Pee Wee Reese  SP

etc,etc,etc, blah, blah, blah

How can the base card be listed as a variation.  I know some of you guys really enjoy all the variations but there has to be a BASE CARD before there can be a variation.

Why would ARod and Vizquel and the others from this set be considered a variation???????????????

I can see your point, but since there's more than one version of the particular base card, I'm guessing it's listed that way so everyone will know that there is another version of each of that card number.

Not really.  Did a little research and all my searches, I can only find that there are  2 versions for card #1 not including the colored parallel cards.  Those are the ARod and the Ruth.  Therefore ARod should be the base card and Ruth should be listed as the variation.  This would also seem to be how they have been listed for the sets in other years since then.

2010 Topps baseball is setup the same way. 2011 is not. Guess that was how whoever made the CL wanted it. Doesn't really mater to me because I'm only likely to go after singles of a few players, I try to do the set I'm going to want all the variants.

I'd say it should all be uniform to whatever the site rules state though.
