Here's the issue: Card 356 has three variations: Jumping / Standing / Running. Cards 356a and 356b are numbered and noted correctly. Card 356c does not have the "c" identifier in the checklist.

I'm sure I screwed it up. 356c originally had "356c" typed in the cardnum field. Since that is not how I understand the correct numbering system to work, I changed the cardnum field to "356" in the understanding that the "c" designation would be automaticly created when the note field contained "VAR" and the note 2 field contained "VAR: delineating feature"

This did not happen. I'm assumming that the "c" designation did not appear because the cardnum field was initially inputed as "356c".

Can anyone provide insight and/or guidance?

I've added the "c" back to card #356c.  Cards with VARs will have a secondary CardNum field for the "a", "b", etc.  If you turn on editing and go to edit cardnum you'll see the second field.

This must have happened during my latest hiatus.  Great new feature that may not be new.
