Since I am OCD, I also have kept track of when I completed many of the sets. If I know the exact date, I will include it in the caption. I also had the idea, circa 2004, to record the last card I needed to complete the set, if I wrote it down, that is the card I will use for this album.
1. 1990 Classic Monster Trucks #35 Andy Brass
This is one of my favorite sets...it was the first set I ever did a box of, and it was the first set I ever completed, both when they were new in 1990. I actually knew Andy Brass in real life- to an extent - (he remembered me from year to year at the local races) so this is the card I chose to use for the set. |
2. 1990 Impel Marvel Universe #18 Thor
This was likely my second completed set. It's funny, I'm not a Marvel comics fan, but I have quite a few of their cards- and I loved the Avengers, Thor and Captain America movies, plus most of the X-Men movies and the Fantastic Four movies. I don't know how this one was completed, my brother got them for me and put them in pages for me when I was pretty darn young. |
3. 1991 Impel G.I. Joe #136 Tracker
I was a big fan of GI Joe for a large part of my life (I still read the comics and maintain friendships with several people from the hobby) and this set came out right in the peak of my time with Joe. I chose Tracker because of my personal history with the figure- it was the only 1991 figure we were not able to find, and it eluded us for years. Eventually my brother mail ordered a copy of the figure for my birthday in the mid-late 90s. |
4. 1991 Pro Set Bill & Ted's Most Atypical Movie Cards #46 Bill & Ted's Cast Photo
I enjoyed both of these movies although the first one moreso. Another set that my brother got for me when it was new, or close to it. |
5. 1992 SkyBox Doomsday: The Death of Superman #89 Death of A hero!
Unlike my comment about Marvel comics above, I grew up reading DC Comics and only stopped in 2011. My brother got me this set when it was new. |
6. 1992 Maxx (Red) #2 Rusty Wallace
My first completed NASCAR set! I discovered NASCAR at Christmas 1992, and I bought this set as a factory set sometime in the spring or summer of 1993 from our then-current comic dealer. |
7. 1996 SPx #50 Rasheed Wallace
My first completed basketball set. The set is mis-labeled as a 1996 only release but it's really a 1995-96 release- it was the last release of the 1995-96 season, coming out during the playoffs. I remember this well; I discovered the NBA on the final day of the 1995-96 regular season, when my mom brought me a random pack of cards (see later in this album). My parents gave me this set for my birthday in 1996. |
8. 1996 Upper Deck Slam Dunk Series #13 Rodney Rogers
This was the first set I completed from packs, IE not from a box, factory set or a set collated by someone else and sold as a unit. Granted, it's only a 40 card set, but for a 12 year old it was an accomplishment! |
9. 1996-97 Collector's Choice #293 Dontae' Jones
This is just a random card, as the previous was. I had done some packs of both series but eventually got the factory set. |
10. 1996-97 Topps Stars #93 John Stockton
1996-97 Topps Stars was a great set, (again, Beckett gets it wrong, big surprise there!) highlighting the 50 Greatest Players the NBA selected for it's 50th Anniversary, celebrated all throughout 1996-97. As someone who has always been a fan of history, learning about the history of my new hobby was a very nice time for me. I bought a set collated by my local card shop. |

The Marvel Universe cards...I wasn't ever into comics, but most of the boys in my class were collecting these cards, so I did as well. Everybody was trading and working on sets...and chasing those holograms!

Man, Billy! I get excited about basketball everytime I read a list of yours. I didn't see 90-91 Skybox or Hoops as completed. Are they, but just not logged in? | ||

It's surprising to me how very few of MY very few sets are in your list! In NASCAR, I saw 2010 Legends on the list. I pulled that whole set from one hobby box. 2009 Press Pass Racing, I still have an unopened factory set of that as a freebie from D&A Cardworld. 1996 UD Road to the Cup Racing, you just sent me the next to last card I need to complete that set about a month ago, but still missing that last one. Where are the NBA sets that I actually own? I HAD the 92-93 sets of Skybox and UD until someone stole a bunch of my cards. I actually had almost every complete set released for NBA cards that season. I picked specific sets to replace the missing cards from those years and re-completed the full Stadium Club and Ultra sets. I kept/re-completed a few of the insert sets from various brands for that year too. BUT, I mostly traded away cards from anything that year to finish my Club and Ultra sets. I also have the 1994-95 Ultra set and the Series 2 set of 1997-98 Z-Force (loved that brand). Back to the Marvel cards mentioned before, 1990 Impel Marvel Universe is the TOP non-sport set that I would love to complete! The holograms are RARE and I have 2 of them already. But I loved the design so much that I went after the 1991 Impel Marvel Universe set hard when it was released and it still took me 15 years to get the last two base cards I needed to complete that set. I completed the 5-card hologram set LONG before I completed the base set!!! I haven't even mentioned my MLB/NFL complete sets or the other NASCAR sets I've completed. I generally don't go after complete sets, but when I get close enough or really like the set, I'll try to complete it.

That's the neat thing about the hobby, odds are nobody's collection will be exactly the same. If I had lots of money I'd complete a lot more sets, LOL! I'm curious to see what my first completed Hockey set will be. I know I have two factory sets waiting to be opened so I could make it one of them pretty easily, but I don't want to do that just yet... | ||
This is a very cool list Billy. As very much a non-set collector I am always fascinated by the people who go after complete sets and how they go about competing them. That is something I could never do, and that's ok. My collection is on random, always has been always will. | ||
Oh there's a ton of randomness to my collection. It's just really luck when I do complete a set these days! |
