1. 1990 Topps Bazooka #22 Jim Abbott


OVERCAME
Born without a right hand. Played 11 seasons, had one no-hitter. He also played quarterback in high school.


2. 1991 NetPro The Legends #17 Arthur Ashe


SUCCUMB
His career ended when he was diagnosed with heart disease in 1980.


3. 1962-63 Topps #36 Murray Balfour


SUCCUMB
In April 1965 a tumor was found in his lung; endnig his career and leading to his death on 30 May 1965.


4. 2010 Wheels Element #98 Trevor Bayne


OVERCAME
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis on 12 November 2013.

5. 1979 Topps #258 Ricky Bell


SUCCUMB
Retired prior to the 1983 season due to the skin/muscle disorder dermatomyositis. He died on 28 November 1984 due to heart failure caused by the disorder.


6. 2015-16 O-Pee-Chee #457 Bryan Bickell


SUCCUMB
In November 2016 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Retired at the end of the 2016-17 season.

7. 2003-04 Pacific #210 Jason Blake


OVERCAME
Blake announced on 8 October 2007 that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

8. 1996 Upper Deck USA Olympicards #62 Jeff Blatnik


OVERCAME & SUCCUMB
In 1982, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, prompting the removal of his spleen and appendix.
After radiation therapy helped to hold the cancer in remission, Blatnick competed in and won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games. He and his teammate were the first Americans to ever win gold in Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling history. Blatnick retired from wrestling after a second round with cancer,


9. 1977 Topps #281 Rocky Bleier


OVERCAME
After his rookie season with the Steelers, Bleier was drafted into the U.S. Army. He volunteer for Vietnam. In August 1969, Rocky was wounded in the left thigh by a bullet. While he was down, he received shrapnel in his right leg and lost part of his right foot from a grenade blast. Doctors told him he'd never play football again. Five years later he earned a starting position.


10. 2007-08 Fleer Hot Prospects #16 Chris Bosh


SUCCUMB
In 2017 the NBA ruled him ineligible to play due to illness; venous thrombosis (blood clotting).

Don't have anyone to add, but I saw Jim Abbott play quarterback in high school, and he was pretty good at that too.

Former Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk came back from one of the most gruesome game injuries in sports history. A skate blade severed his carotid artery and jugular vein. Remarkably, he was back on the ice 10 days later.

Here I would think be one, USMNT and Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard overcame Tourette's and OCD.

Kevin Love recently made public his fight with anxiety.

Daniel Poncedeleon pitched in Spring Training with the Cardinals this year, a year after getting hit in the head by a line drive comebacker that required brain and skull surgery.

Korey Stringer died after a pre-season practice from heat stroke.

Ted Williams had his body frozen, so they can bring him back to life later.  In the meantime, his head has fallen off.  So he could potentially make this list at a later date.

Josh Harding was diagnosed with MS, but bounced back to win the Bill Masterson Trophy in the 2012-13 season and to record a .933 SV% in the 2013-14 season. However, that would be his last NHL season.
