10,000 People By Sport

by Billy Kingsley - 74 cards (Last updated on Jan 21, 2017)

12. 2011 Topps American Pie #192 Michael Phelps wins 8 Golds

Now we get into the more esoteric and unique sports. I had a list of "other sports" which totaled 626 different people, but for this list I broke them down into actual sports. Swimming leads the way with 64 people in my collection, not too much of a surprise as it has become the leading showcase for the Olympics.

13. 1971 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters #29 Curly Neal

Other professional basketball also has 64 people, but will go up shortly as a fellow card blogger is helping me get a box of the Japanese professional basketball cards. For now, the list includes Harlem Globetrotters, the old CBA, and one single card of a Wheelchair Basketball player from SI for kids. I'm not sure if I remembered to include the European players from 1991-92 Upper Deck International editions so this number might actually be 4 or 5 higher. Curly Neal is one of the only two people on this list I've actually met.

14. 2016 Topps U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Hopefuls #31 Tori Bowie

Track & Field has 61 people listed, but the numbers are a little iffy- if an athlete only took part in one form, like hurdling for example, I listed them as such. I don't have enough knowledge of the sport to be able to break it down by actual discipline just based on the person, unfortunately.

15. 1993 Racing Champions World Of Outlaws #03524 Terry McCarl

Terry McCarl won the only World of Outlaws Sprint Car race I ever went to, in 2008. I have 59 different Sprint car people in my collection, and he is one of only two people on the list I've met.

16. 2012 Upper Deck MLS #104 Juan Agudelo

I can't get into soccer. I tried, during the 2012 Olympics. It's one of only 2 Olympic sports I can't get into. It's having a surge of popularity and soccer cards, especially the very successful US Women's Team, have been dominating the Olympic sets of the last two games and even took up a third of the 2012 Panini Americana set. With that said, I also have 59 soccer players in my collection. I chose this card because it was the first actual soccer card- not from a multi-sport set- in my collection, from a pack I purchased solely so I could add something from soccer to the Database. As it turned out, only the back of the pack itself needed to be posted.

17. 2014 Topps U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team & Hopefuls - Autographs #23 Billy Demong

Skiing is very popular in winter Olympic sets, which is why I have 52 different skiiers in my collection. While I could have gone with a more well known name like Lindsey Vonn (who shares my birthday to the exact year) I instead went with one of the very few Olympic autographs in my collection, which I pulled from a hobby box of the set.

18. 1988 Leesley Bigfoot #001 Bob Chandler

Monster truck racing is what began my love affair with the sport of auto racing at 2 years old in 1986. I no longer watch as they stopped being about racing and became more about flipping over- not my idea of fun. But, it held a very, very important part of my life for many years, and not the least of which is that this 1988 Leesley Bigfoot set was the very first trading cards I ever collected, when the set was new. I've never left the hobby and will be celebrating my 30th year next year. There were only 4 monster truck sets ever issued, one of which I have been unable to hunt down any examples or even a checklist on (It's not listed here) but I still managed to get 42 different monster truck drivers and crew members. The 1990 Classic set was the first box of cards I ever opened, and the first set I posted in it's entirety to the Database. Like I said- mostly out of my life now, but very important all the same.

19. 2012 Upper Deck National Convention VIP #VIP-5 Tiger Woods

Golf has 31 people in my collection. If they televised miniature golf, I'd watch it, and if my health would allow, I'd still play it!

20. 2015 Sports Illustrated for Kids #483 Serena Williams

Tennis also has 31 cards in my collection. Like (miniature) golf, I used to play it when I was younger and healthier, but that was a long time ago.

21. 2016 Topps U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Hopefuls - Olympic Disciplines #OD-19 Gabby Douglas

Gymnastics is actually a little lower than I expected with only 26 people in my collection. It's one of the showcases of the Olympics, and yes, I do watch it.

Billy, I just noticed your sample card #58 for Lacrosse, Paula Heuser, is actually a field hockey card.
