Patches!by Billy Kingsley - 103 cards (Last updated on Feb 25, 2020) |
There is something special about pulling a patch card. When they started doing relics in 1996 they didn't do patches, and when they started introducing patch cards, they didn't make a big deal about it...if you got one, that was great, but it was just considered a jersey card. That didn't last long, and they soon became the de facto parallel for relics.
For the NBA, patches come from the player's name, the team logo, the number, or the tag. (But NOT the borders around the arm or neck holes) For NASCAR it comes from the sponsor patches or the driver's name. I've got quite a few patches, so I thought I would share them in a List.
11. 2003-04 Fleer Focus - NBA Shirtified Jerseys Nameplates #NSNP-BW Ben Wallace
The multi-tiered insets that all kind of look alike can be confusing, but I like how this one lets you know what part of the jersey your patch came from. |
12. 2003-04 Fleer Focus - NBA Shirtified Jersey Numbers #NSN-KM Kenyon Martin
I guess I did scan one of my Nets patches, but not the one I was thinking of! |
13. 2003-04 Fleer Mystique - Shining Stars Patches (75) #SSP-PS Peja Stojakovic
Kind of washed out, but this one is gray, white purple and black. I should probably rescan the front of this card. |
14. 2003-04 Fleer Patchworks - Jerseys Multi Color #PW-GR Glenn Robinson
The patch on this card is from his Hawks jersey. |
15. 2003-04 Fleer Patchworks - Licensed Apparel Tags #LA-MB Mike Bibby
I pulled this one. Love the tag! |
16. 2003-04 Fleer Patchworks - By The Numbers Jerseys Patches #BTN/SON Shaquille O'Neal
Pulled this one when new, and I've never been able to figure out where the patch came from. |
17. 2003-04 Fleer Platinum - Nameplates #NP/AJ Antawn Jamison
Not an exciting patch, but the worse part of this is that the adhesive didn't quite take right and there is a permanent curve in the front of the card, luckily not visible in the scan. |
19. 2003-04 Fleer Platinum - Nameplates #NP/SB Shane Battier
When you see Battier interviewed, he sounds more like a college professor than some actual college professors I've met. |
20. 2003-04 Fleer Showcase - Basketball's Best Memorabilia Gold #BB-JR Jason Richardson
I believe this is taken from the I in Richardson. Might be from the H too. |

Impressive collection there Billy. Did you pull many of those from packs?

Hi Switzr, I just saw your comment now. I would say that roughly 75% to 80% of these were indeed pulled by me. I also purchased some as singles, traded for one or two and even won one of them as a giveaway! I usually am making note of where I got them, but sometimes I don't actually remember. I was bringing in over 1000 new cards a month during the peak of my collecting in 2002-04, when most of these were added to my collection, and I just don't remember on many of them.

I like that Gasol game worn jersey patch, good pick-up there.

I go for the 'PRIME' patches myself...just because they are more colorful!

Great collection of memorabilia - nice variety - gotta love those monochrome "patches" :) That Shaquille O'Neal patch looks like it hits "right between the numbers", as in the 3 & 4. Turned sideways, the two-color piece is part of the 3's upper curve & the small piece is the 4's left-most point.
Just saw the comments I got years ago...major facepalm on my part! Thank you all Joey, Ray and SaintOrm! You might be right on the Shaq, certainly better than I've come up with.
I think hockey cards have the best patches.
That Gretzky is SWEET! | ||
Thanks! I'm still kind of amazed that I was able to pull that one. Certainly my best so far. |
