Cards I got signed, with storyby vrooomed - 64 cards (Last updated on Dec 22, 2017) |
An additional autograph story: In 1990, during Spring Training, I asked Juan Samuel and Mike Scioscia to each sign a baseball for me. The balls had been used for batting practice and had actually been hit out of the park. My dad and I had picked up about 20-25 balls and we were giving them out to kids so they could use them for autographs too. Got to tell Juan Samuel how much we missed him being a Phillie. I got Scioscia's autograph because he's from near Philadelphia.
1. 1983 Donruss #606 Ozzie Virgil
Unknown car dealership, Route 130, Burlington County, NJ, 1983. I was 13 at the time, and my parents got a phone call from a friend of theirs who was in sales at a car dealership about 30 minutes away from our house. The hot rookie pitcher (Charles "Don't call me Charlie" Hudson) and the rookie catcher (Ozzie Virgil) were going to be there to sign autographs for free. So I grabbed the only Virgil cards I had (by himself) and took them to get them signed. I got Hudson's on a piece of paper. They may have had promotional 5x7s as well, and I think I got one of each of them, but don't know where they are at this time. If they surface, they'll be added to the binders. Actual card |

3. 1983 Topps #383 Ozzie Virgil

4. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #2 Randy Day
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. Even though Philadelphia was a lot closer, we found that going the hour and a half to Reading was a lot more enjoyable. We were able to get 3 seats 2 rows from the field for about the same price as one semi-decent seat at Veteran's Stadium. One of the days we went in 1985, we had bought the team set, and then there was a pretty big rain storm causing a delay. The players wound up under the stands with the fans. We pulled out the cards, and started finding the players. Some of the players even helped us find their cards in the set. Got 15 autographs that day! Actual card |
5. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #3 Marvin Freeman
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. See the Randy Day card. Of the 5 players who signed for me who made it to the majors, Marvin had the most success, playing in parts of 10 seasons with 4 different clubs. Actual card |
6. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #4 Bruce Long
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. See the Randy Day card. Actual card |
7. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #7 Keith Miller
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. See the Randy Day card. Actual card |
8. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #9 Ken Kinnard
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. See the Randy Day card. Actual card |
9. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #10 Todd Soares
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. See the Randy Day card. Actual card |
10. 1985 ProCards Reading Phillies #11 Greg Jelks

Those are cool cards with awesome storys, I wish I had some autos
This inspires me to make a list of my signed cards, but will have to be delayed as I’m still adding cards to my collection.
Dan, you're the greatest! (Who am I to call Morena Corwin a liar?)
David - LOL! Glad to see you looked at my list. This is one that will continue to grow and get the actual cards uploaded. It's a small part of my collection, but the fact that I have stories behind each one is what makes it so special. I honestly get the autographs for the story behind it rather than for any monetary value (else I never would have asked 75% of the players/people I have). And, heck, Morena is right. :)
I went to high school (Lawrence, Kansas) with Steve Jeltz. I hope he became a nicer person as an adult. In high school he was a first class jerk.
Great stories, looking forward in checking out this list in the future.
AA Eastern League is where I get most of my autographs, only tried to get one Reading Phil though, and that was Preston Claiborne, see my Rejected! list to see how that turned out.
Your story of the Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. Me & my dad would go to the Albany-Colonie Yankees games. I'd buy three of the four seats in a box for $18. Nobody ever bought the fourth seat, so we'd have the whole box to ourselves.
Chuck, reason I know it's one of those 2 dates, I had actually saved my ticket stubs. These box seats were $3 each! And same, we almost always had a seat next to us empty. Hope everyone enjoys this as much as I do. I am having a blast (from the past) going through my cards. I didn't realize I had so many cards signed! (I still have more to go!)
I’m realizing the same thing as I’m sorting through them.
I'll have to check out Swami's shop sometime. I'm right in Mt. Laurel. Funny, I remember as a kid going to some auto dealership on 130 to see Larry Bowa and got a signed picture. |
