Cards I got signed, with story

by vrooomed - 22 cards (Last updated on Dec. 12, 2017)

1986 Donruss #355 Larry Andersen Front

1. 1986 Donruss #355 Larry Andersen

First base side stands, Veteran's Stadium, Philadelphia, pre-game, 1986. I went field-side and looked pretty big as a late-teen amongst the mostly 10-year-olds who were down there not being polite. He scolded many of them for being rude. That was never the way I was, and I very politely asked if he would sign my card (maybe 2) and thanked him, while calling him "Mr. Andersen." He was very pleasant and patient with me. Actual card

1990 Score #623 Pat Combs Front

2. 1990 Score #623 Pat Combs

Spring Training, Clearwater, FL, March, 1990. After a work stoppage that caused a delayed and shortened Spring Training, we heard that there were going to be a few intra-squad games before games with other teams would start. I actually got this, and the other Combs cards from this year, signed in the middle of the game. He was scheduled to only pitch one inning, and did so. As he was heading to the clubhouse, he stopped to sign for several people. This was the first card I had Pat sign, as it was my favorite of his. After he signed for everyone else, I chatted with him about his experience at the Olympics and other baseball related topics. I also asked if he would sign the other cards I had of him (just one of each) and a NL ball. I have a ball and card holder that the Score and the ball are in. Also of note, as he was signing, he apologized for his hand still shaking from having just pitched. Actual card

1990 Upper Deck #418 Darren Daulton Front

6. 1990 Upper Deck #418 Darren Daulton

Spring Training, Clearwater, FL, March, 1990. After a work stoppage that caused a delayed and shortened Spring Training, we heard that there were going to be a few intra-squad games before games with other teams would start. After the game, several of the players generously signed for the fans that remained. Very glad Darren was one of the players I got that day. (I had some assistance from 2 other people getting the autographs after the game, so I don't know which one of us actually got his.) Actual card

1990 Donruss #133 Steve Jeltz Front

7. 1990 Donruss #133 Steve Jeltz

Spring Training, Clearwater, FL, March, 1990. After a work stoppage that caused a delayed and shortened Spring Training, we heard that there were going to be a few intra-squad games before games with other teams would start. After the game, several of the players generously signed for the fans that remained. Actual card

8. 1990 Donruss #278 Von Hayes

Spring Training, Clearwater, FL, March, 1990. After a work stoppage that caused a delayed and shortened Spring Training, we heard that there were going to be a few intra-squad games before games with other teams would start. After the game, several of the players generously signed for the fans that remained. (My mom was probably the helper that got this one signed because she wanted to meet him.)

9. 1990 Upper Deck #453 Von Hayes

Spring Training, Clearwater, FL, March, 1990. After a work stoppage that caused a delayed and shortened Spring Training, we heard that there were going to be a few intra-squad games before games with other teams would start. 1986 Donruss #482 Lenny Dykstra Front

10. 1986 Donruss #482 Lenny Dykstra

Card show, Hammonton, NJ, 1991. Cookie cutter line, no chat. In retrospect, it was probably better that way. Actual card

This inspires me to make a list of my signed cards, but will have to be delayed as I’m still adding cards to my collection.

David - LOL! Glad to see you looked at my list. This is one that will continue to grow and get the actual cards uploaded. It's a small part of my collection, but the fact that I have stories behind each one is what makes it so special. I honestly get the autographs for the story behind it rather than for any monetary value (else I never would have asked 75% of the players/people I have).

And, heck, Morena is right. :)

I went to high school (Lawrence, Kansas) with Steve Jeltz. I hope he became a nicer person as an adult. In high school he was a first class jerk.
