2018 Card of the Day

by Billy Kingsley - 143 cards (Last updated on May. 23, 2018)

1. 2013 Panini Beach Boys #44 Brian Wilson

May 23rd. I give Panini grief for their poor handling of the NBA, but they did this set very well.

It's funny...I've been a huge fan of the Beach Boys most of my life...when I was in high school, my friends were listening to Eminem, or Britney Spears...not me. I was listening to the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, etc. Then, I found out in December 2016, that the Wilsons and Mike Love are actually very distant cousins of mine! More than 20 times removed, so when I say distant, it's quite distant...but still, blood related! (You have to go back to the 1300s to have a common grandparent for us). That was one of the coolest discoveries ever, in my opinion! After saying for years "I really need to get a box of that set" I finally did.

2. 2017 C2Cigars TCDB Business Card Canvas #BC-ND NJDevils

May 22nd. Remember back in January I said this set would appear again? Well, here we are! I decided early on that I would take a walk backwards through my 30 years in the hobby and so, I decided to do all 4 major aspects in the reverse order of when I began to collect them. I began collecting the NHL in 2016, which came first. The NBA became my main collecting focus in 1996, so it came next. NASCAR became my main aspect of the hobby in 1992, but it all started in 1988 with non-sports cards, which I collected until 1996/97, and then again in 2009-current. Today and the next 6 days will be all non-sports cards as my card of the day. I have yet to decide what I will do for the remaining days of the month yet.

3. 2005 Press Pass Legends - Greatest Moments #GM18 Ricky Craven / Kurt Busch

May 21st, completing NASCAR week. It came from my COMC box.

4. 1995 Upper Deck #234 Jeff Burton

May 20th, from the very last NASCAR pack in my stash, which has been in my possession since Christmas 2013, when I got a retail box of the set.

1995 is one of my all-time favorite seasons in the sport. Probably my 2nd favorite season after only 1998. Good times.

2017 Panini Absolute - Tools of the Trade #TT-AJ A.J. Allmendinger Front

5. 2017 Panini Absolute - Tools of the Trade #TT-AJ A.J. Allmendinger

May 19th...my local Target STILL has not bothered to bring in 2018 Donruss, which my brother took me looking for yesterday. This was, in fact, the only NASCAR blaster in the store. Once again, I opened the pack on the side to get the relic card first, but it turned out I didn't need to as the two base cards were duplicates...in the 4 blasters of this set I've opened, I've gotten the same 2 base cards in 3 of them. Typical Panini. Interestingly, the pack also gave me a SN parallel of AJ as well.

6. 2009 Press Pass Stealth #28 Scott Riggs

May 18th, from my pack stash. I'm running very low on NASCAR packs in my stash, and will probably not make it the three days left of this week before running out...

7. 1999 Wheels High Gear #33 Jeff Gordon's Car

May 17th, the last pack out of the box I got for Christmas 2013...also completed the set, the first time my Card of the Day project did that, and also my fourth major completed set of 2018.

8. 1990 Maxx - Glossy #1 Terry Labonte

May 16th, from a factory set sent to me by Angus quite a while back, that I've been saving for this project. I don't have too much of a stash for NASCAR- I've opened most of my pack stash for the sport at this point- so this set will be my reserve if I can't get any others for this week. The Glossy set was available only in factory set form, but it wasn't the only factory set available- the standard cards also were available in a factory set, which I added to my collection probably about 15 years ago now.

9. 2009 Press Pass Legends - Gold #11 Bob Flock

May 15th. NASCAR week begins with one of the few NASCAR cards in my COMC box. Until very recently I have not had much luck adding NASCAR cards to my collection on COMC. The 2018 Spring Cleaning sale was totally different and I added almost 200, which I have not had shipped yet. This was an interesting day as we had a tornado.

10. 2003-04 Upper Deck Legends #123 Jason Kapono

May 14th. It was supposed to be an entire week of cards out of my case of Revolution. I didn't take into account that Panini would be so poorly run that the entire last box would be nothing but duplicates, or that I would get more than 200 duplicates but still be 5 cards short of the set...really annoying. Since I didn't get a single new card from the entire box I opened, I pulled this one from the COMC box for my card of the day.

Great start to the project with a serial numbered card!

Yeah that was a nice bonus...but not too surprising considering my COMC habits, lol

Jan. 3, 2018 - 8:39AM

Cool Project Billy.

Jan. 3, 2018 - 10:21AM

Man I wish Fleer still made NBA cards.  Flair cards are awesome.

Thanks Kirk!

Me too Shannon. They were my favorite company for the NBA. They still owed me three redemptions when they went under, too!

Jan. 7, 2018 - 11:20PM

Man I wish Star still made V I Model Search cards.  What is V I anyway?

Based on the copyright on the back it appears to be Venus Swimwear International, with VI standing for Venus International. Yes, I actually read the back!

Jan. 25, 2018 - 11:44AM

Very cool project to undertake for the year.

Jan. 28, 2018 - 8:38AM

Shouldn't #27 say "January 27th"?

Jan. 28, 2018 - 3:19PM
Billy Kingsley

I don't know what you are talking about ;)

Jan. 29, 2018 - 9:46AM

Glad you finally got your David Robinson Electric Court!  I was looking for it online for you one day, and I remember I ended up seeing two different David Robinsons in that Electric Court checklist and I wasn't sure which one it was you needed.  I am pretty sure that after I confirmed it with you, the card I was looking at online was no longer available.

Jan. 29, 2018 - 5:41PM

Good move switching to reverse order, Billy.

I was hoping it would make the sample image on the main page change every day, but no such luck.

Thanks Shannon, for a one-per-pack card I don't know why it proved to be so elusive!

Feb. 7, 2018 - 2:52PM

That Celtic card is epic!

Feb. 9, 2018 - 9:37PM

The Sample card for lists is always the #1 card. You'll have to leave the List Settings for Display as "Ascending" and resort the cards so the newest card is card #1.

I'll try it for now...not sure if I am going to want to put in that effort for the entire year, or will have the time all the time.

Chad- thanks! it has a great photo of two of the all-time greatest...and one I had never seen before.

Feb. 11, 2018 - 10:52AM

Right now you only have 40 cards to sort into order.  After they're sorted it's only a matter of sorting (moving) one card each day.

Feb. 11, 2018 - 11:20PM

February 11th card. Look at Dryden's mask and equipment compared to today's. He and goalies of his era and older must look at today's goalies and just mutter "Wimps."

Mar. 13, 2018 - 12:18PM

Good add with the Edwards, one of my favorites

Mar. 16, 2018 - 5:02AM

I didn't know you were a NASCAR fan Ian, cool!

Mar. 16, 2018 - 9:26AM

Not as much as I used to be, but yeah. Becoming a Bubba fan.

Cool! He's one of my favorites already.

Mar. 19, 2018 - 4:19PM

ahh, love to see some NASCAR talk! kinda hard finsing a place online to talk it.

Apr. 9, 2018 - 6:49AM

Try here DarkSide for race day chats

Apr. 20, 2018 - 3:52PM

cool idea, to be this organized

Re: May 1st - Upper Deck Overtime packs are supposed to be an in-store giveaway, like Upper Deck Winter, National Hockey Card Day, Panini Player of the Day, Panini Boxing Day, etc. But like many of the others a large number of the packs always seem to get opened by retailers and sold as singles.

Interesting, thank you. I don't think my local shop participates.

May. 20, 2018 - 2:49AM

For May 19th, I think you've missed the bus with 2018 Donruss Racing. If they aren't there already, they aren't going to be there soon. Maybe next year, when the mark-downs show up on shelves. But the 'Dinger MEM isn't a bad card. I also pulled one of those from a blaster of 2017 Absolute. Mine had a small part of the Monster Energy logo on the sheet metal. Just be glad it isn't a plain one-color metal! Looks to me like it's easier to pull multi-color MEM's from retail than it is from hobby with Panini Racing cards.

I have an order in for 2 hobby boxes of the new 2018 Victory Lane cards. I hope it ends up being worth the money!

I think you are right. My local Target has only brought in two new sets since Christmas, 2018 Topps Baseball and 2017-18 Donruss Optic, which had a Target exclusive. This is bad for me since it's where I get most of my new cards.
