February 2018 Non-Sport Acquisitions

by cnangle - 12 cards (Last updated on Feb 25, 2018)

1. 1922 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Third Series (J7) #11 Scott Oriole

I purchased a complete 30-card, 3rd-series set off of ebay for $9.99 (+$4.00 shipping). At 50 cents a card I couldn't pass it up.

Now I have a double of this card. I purchased one in January as part of a larger lot.

2. 1931 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Fourth Series (J8) #29 Ruffed Grouse

This is part of a 45 card lot of various Church & Dwight cards I bought at an antique store for about $30. The lot include a two complete sets, two partial sets, and a couple singles.

This is the only card from the fourth series in the lot but it is one of my favorites. Even in the scan you can see how the image "jumps" off the card.

3. 1933 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Fifth Series (J9-1) #4 Sandpiper

This is part of a 45 card lot of various Church & Dwight cards I bought at an antique store for about $30. The lot include a two complete sets, two partial sets, and a couple singles.

This is the only card from the fifth series in the lot. The fifth series is a set of 15 (vs 30 cards in series 1-4) and all the cards are reprints from earlier series. I don't think I will try for the rest of the set. Well, to be honest, my OCD might make me buy more.

4. 1933 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Sixth Series (J9-2) #15 Junco

This is part of a 45 card lot of various Church & Dwight cards I bought at an antique store for about $30. The lot include a two complete sets, two partial sets, and a couple singles.

There were 14 of 15 cards from this series in the lot. Like series 5, series 6 also contains reprints of cards already published. Since I'm only 1 card away from a complete set, I will try and complete it.

5. 1935 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Eighth Series (J9-4) #8 Pine Grosbeak

This is part of a 45 card lot of various Church & Dwight cards I bought at an antique store for about $30. The lot include a two complete sets, two partial sets, and a couple singles.

This is one of the two complete sets that were in this lot. Series 8 also contains subjects that were released in series 1-4. They are still beautiful cards and I'm glad to have them in my collection.

6. 1936 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Ninth Series (J9-5) #7 Downy Woodpecker

This is part of a 45 card lot of various Church & Dwight cards I bought at an antique store for about $30. The lot include a two complete sets, two partial sets, and a couple singles.

This is the second of the complete sets that were in this lot. Series 9 contains original cards and is a great looking set.

7. 1938 Church & Dwight Useful Birds of America Tenth Series (J9-6) #4 Black-billed Cuckoo

This is part of a 45 card lot of various Church & Dwight cards I bought at an antique store for about $30. The lot include a two complete sets, two partial sets, and a couple singles.

There were 9 of 15 cards from this series in the lot. Like series 9, series 10 contains unique cards. I will try to finish off this set.

8. 1895 J&P Coats Uniforms of the US Army (H606) #NNO 1888-1893 Campaign Dress

I stepped up on this one. I paid $17.99 (plus $3.49 shipping). I'm not sure if I overpaid for this one or not. I really like this card and while researching it, I couldn't find another example on any of the auction sites I follow.

Since there was one on ebay, I figured I should jump on it before it was gone. I'll probably find dozens of them in antique store somewhere for less than $5. Well, I guess if I do I'll have to buy them too.

9. 1886 Beautiful Birds of America (J1) #26 Common American Crow

Another antique store find. Despite already being over budget for February, I couldn't pass these up. I bought five Church and/or Dwight cards for under $5.00. There not in the best of condition but I figure I'd better buy them when I see them.

I love this set. The text on the bottom of the front is the only series that has this look. The tab on the bottom with the Arm & Hammer logo is actually a coupon. Many cards from this series have the coupon removed so I was glad to get one with it still attached.

10. 1898 Dwight's Soda Interesting Animals (J10) #42 Yak

I will complete this set. I'll probably have to get both the Church & Co. and John Dwight & Co. sets. Damn my OCD!

wow those are  beautiful cards! I just got lucky and found around a 100+ in a baggie at my local thrift store. Has a little bit of everything in in Dwights (arm and hammer) form a couple fish series a couple dairy series, some interesting animals some minis and a butt load of the bird series. and around 25 sugar daddy comic cards from 1953. I'm trying to find some checklists for some like the dairy series and the fish series.
