March 2018 Non-sport Acquisitionsby cnangle - 38 cards (Last updated on Mar 31, 2018) |
3/17 update: This has been a month of coffee cards. I think that's all that I've bought this month. My wife and I did some antique hunting near Rochester, MN today. She found a lot of vintage books. I only found four trade cards...all coffee cards.
This is will be my third month of actively buying vintage non-sport. I'm finding that I am drawn towards trade cards more than tobacco issues. They are generally a little cheaper and the subject matter is a little broader.
32. 1889 Arbuckle's Coffee Principle Nations of the World (K3) #67 Greece
This is the best of the Arbuckles cards I bought this month. I really like the artwork and scene depicted on the front. |
33. 1898-00 The American Singer Series (H683) #2 Baltimore Oriole
I passed on the opportunity to by the entire 16 card set last weekend. They were asking $5 for each card and that was a little more (actually a lot more) than I was willing to pay.

34. 1898-00 The American Singer Series (H683) #11 Cat-Bird
This is another of the group of three that I purchased. It is an interesting set. I like the artwork and the life-sized egg that is included on the front. I'm kind of at a saturation point with bird cards though. Last month I was on an Arm & Hammer bird series hunt and I think I've had my fill of birds for awhile. |
35. 1898-00 The American Singer Series (H683) #15 Yellow-Breasted Chat
"A yellow bird, with a yellow bill". All of the Army vets should recognize that. |
36. 1888-89 Arbuckle's Coffee Illustrated Jokes (Satire) (K7) #25 A Sinecure
I don't find 19th Century humor all that funny. For only $1 I couldn't pass up this card though. I'm a big fan of Arbuckle's cards and I really like the card back on this one. |
37. 1892 Gold Band Coffee Life of Columbus (K134) #NNO Before the Council of Salamanca
This is an interesting set. Not much is known about it. I'm assuming it was issued in 1892, the 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing. There were several other Columbus themed series issued that year. This was an antique store purchase under $5. |
38. 1892 Gold Band Coffee Life of Columbus (K134) #NNO Second Departure to America
My second "Life of Columbus" card. After finding one at an antique store, I went hunting on ebay and picked this one up for less than $5 as well. The cards are large: 5 x7. It makes storage a pain. I think I will display these along with my H606 Uniforms of the US Army cards. |

Yeah, I don't get the joke on the Arbuckle card either. But the Columbus cards are beauties. Especially the Salamanca one. Nice pick-ups.
I'm also not finding the satire card very funny. Maybe they were more easily amused back then? I like the back much better- I enjoy seeing old buildings, which probably weren't that old back then!
I like the musician card, mainly because of the unusual stringed instrument she is playing.
Wow. Great list. The Columbus cards are amazing.
I'm also really liking the Columbus cards. I'm still trying to figure out where my interest lies in regards to 19th tobacco and trade cards, but this Columbus series is on my short-list of sets to complete. |
