1969 Topps #483 Ted Abernathy Front

1. 1969 Topps #483 Ted Abernathy

Ted Abernathy

"Abby" d.04 (36 yr. old veteran Reliever) 56 games

Ted was a sidearm pitcher with a submarine pitch developed after a high school shoulder injury. Ted pitched for 14 seasons and led the league in saves in 1965 and 1967. I never had the chance to meet Ted in person. He was generous enough to sign some items that I sent to his home in North Carolina. Ted suffered from Alzheimer's in his later years and passed away at the age of 71.

I have 13 of 13 Topps cards autographed. (38 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #94 Hank Aguirre Front

2. 1969 Topps #94 Hank Aguirre

Hank Aguirre

"Mex" d.94 (38 yr. old veteran Reliever) 41 games

Aguirre pitched 16 years, leading the majors in ERA in 1962. He was a successful Detroit businessman of Mexican descent, founding the multi-million dollar car parts business, Mexican Industries. Hank was the subject of a book: The Tall Mexican: The Life of Hank Aguirre. He passed away in 1994 before I started this project making his signed cards a challenge to find.

1969 Topps #20 Ernie Banks Front

3. 1969 Topps #20 Ernie Banks

Ernie Banks • HOF

"Mr. Cub" d.15 (38 yr. old All-Star 1B) 155 gms

Ernie was an 11 time All-Star hitting 512 home runs over his career of 2,528 games, the most ever without a postseason appearance. He was a 2 time MVP, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977 and named to the MLB All-Century Team. I met Mr. Cub on a number of occasions. He loved to talk with the public, making for memorable meetings, but also long wait times for his autograph.

I have 17 of 32 Topps cards autographed. (26 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #171 Glenn Beckert Front

4. 1969 Topps #171 Glenn Beckert

Glenn Beckert

"Bruno" d.20 (28 yr. old All-Star 2B) 131 games

Beckert was promoted to the majors following the untimely death of Ken Hubbs in a plane crash in 1964. Glenn was a 4 time All-Star that led the league 5 times in fewest strikeouts per at bat. He played in 131 games in '69 despite suffering injuries on four occasions, including a serious thumb injury. Glenn was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade after his MLB career. A wheat trader, I saw him at work at the CBOT every day for years. I regret never asking him for one of his CBOT trading cards to keep. (Update: I found one of his CBOT trading cards)

I have 15 of 15 Topps cards autographed. (54 total signed cards)

5. 1970 Topps #429 Cubs 1970 Rookie Stars (Randy Bobb / Jim Cosman)

Randy Bobb

d.82 (21 yr. old Catcher) 3 games

Absolutely the toughest autograph of all the 1969 Cubs. Why? Only 10 games played over a 2 year MLB career, combined with his death in a car crash in 1982 at the age of 34 makes his cards nearly impossible to find signed. I've never seen a signed copy of either his 1970 or 1971 card and have only ever heard of one in all my years of searching. I only own a few items signed by Randy. I saw his death certificate on file in the archives at Cooperstown.

I have 0 of 2 Topps cards autographed. (0 total signed cards)
Need 1970-429; 1971-83

1974 Topps #601 1974 Rookie Outfielders (Ed Armbrister / Rich Bladt / Brian Downing / Bake McBride) Front

6. 1974 Topps #601 1974 Rookie Outfielders (Ed Armbrister / Rich Bladt / Brian Downing / Bake McBride)

Rich Bladt

(22 yr. old rookie Outfielder) 10 games

Rich played in 10 games in June 1969 before being sent down to the minors. He was later traded in a deal that brought Jimmie Hall to the Cubs. I met Rich on a few occasions to have my items signed. I created 1969 Topps style cards for players from the team that didn't have '69 cards. I had some signed and gave some to players as a gift. I've seen a photo from Rich's home with one of my cards displayed in Rich's personal collection. Very gratifying.

I have 1 of 1 Topps cards autographed. (8 total signed cards)

1971 Topps #38 Jim Colborn Front

7. 1971 Topps #38 Jim Colborn

Jim Colborn

(23 yr. old rookie Pitcher) 6 games

Jim appeared in 6 games in 1969. After 3 seasons with the Cubs he was traded with 2 others to the Brewers for Jose Cardenal. In 1973 he became the Brewers first ever 20 game winner. A local Chicagoland store had Jim as an autograph guest in 2004 where I was able to have him sign many items including a 1969 Topps style replica card I created for him. You can see the replica card I made for him and others on my website.

I have 10 of 10 Topps cards autographed. (30 total signed cards)

1971 Topps #98 Joe Decker Front

8. 1971 Topps #98 Joe Decker

Joe Decker

d.03 (22 yr. old rookie Pitcher) 4 games

Joe was a late September call up appearing in 4 games in 1969. He spent a few years with the Cubs before being traded along with Bill Hands to the Twins after the 1972 season for Dave LaRoche. Joe had his greatest success in Minnesota, once recording 15 strikeouts in a single game. I never had the opportunity to meet Joe or send him any items to sign. He passed away at the age of 55 after a fall at his home in 2003.

I have 7 of 7 Topps cards autographed. (14 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #602 Cubs 1969 Rookie Stars (Alec Distaso / Don Young / Jim Qualls) Front

9. 1969 Topps #602 Cubs 1969 Rookie Stars (Alec Distaso / Don Young / Jim Qualls)

Alec Distaso

d.09 (20 yr. old rookie Pitcher) 2 games

Alec was the first pick in the January 1967 draft. His entire MLB career was 2 relief appearances at the beginning of the year in '69. He later became a police officer and detective in L.A. Alec was surprised at the turnout he got for a public signing I attended in 2002. Alec passed away from cancer at the age of 60 in 2009.

I have 1 of 1 Topps cards autographed. (3 total signed cards)

1970 Topps #654 N.L. 1970 Rookie Stars (Oscar Gamble / Boots Day / Angel Mangual) Front

10. 1970 Topps #654 N.L. 1970 Rookie Stars (Oscar Gamble / Boots Day / Angel Mangual)

Oscar Gamble

d.18 (19 yr. old rookie Outfielder) 24 games

Oscar, who was compared to Willie Mays by Leo Durocher, was called up in August and played in 24 games in 1969. He was traded after the season and played for 7 teams over a 17 year career. He's probably best known for his huge Afro hairdo. Check out his 1976 Topps traded card #74T for a classic example.

I have 18 of 19 Topps cards autographed. (42 total signed cards)

Most impressive collection, and I'm not even an IP auto auto type of collector!

Thanks Billy. I think you'd enjoy all the details I've catalogued involving my autograph collections. Each autographed item includes the date of acquisition, the source and the cost. I too wrote everything down by hand on paper. It all needs to be transferred to an Excel (or Access) doc so I can have better access to the info. I wish I'd kept better records with regards to the costs involved in acquiring the item prior to it being signed. For example, my 1962 Topps signed Jim Hickman only details the cost of acquiring the autograph, but the card itself was probably $40 before it was signed because it's the last card in the set.
