Here's a key to the info on each player's page. For example:
Ted Abernathy
"Abby" d.04 (36 yr. old veteran Reliever) 56 gamesTed Abernathy's nickname was "Abby", he died in 2004, he was a 36 years old relief pitcher during the 1969 season and he appeared in 56 games as a Cub in 1969. If the player was an All-Star in 1969 that is also indicated here. This information is followed by a short player bio including any of my personal encounters with the player.
1969 Cubs Autographed Topps Cards
51. 1969 Topps #602 Cubs 1969 Rookie Stars (Alec Distaso / Don Young / Jim Qualls)
I don't think there are very many of these cards in existence signed by all 3 of these players. There is almost certainly no finer example. Both Jimmy and Alec signed the card at AU Sports in Skokie, IL. Without the players that AU Sports was willing to bring in for public signings, this project would never have become what it is today. Over the years they brought in 15 players from the 1969 roster as well as Yosh Kawano, the equipment manager. For many of them, it was their first public signing. For some, it was their one and only. This was Qualls first public signing ever in February of 2002. The Distaso signing in April 2002 was his one and only public signing. That left Don Young who hadn't been seen in years. The card was completed with Don's autograph at a private signing by Sam Lynagh in February of 2007. |
52. 1969 Topps #147 Leo Durocher
Leo Durocher • HOF"Leo the Lip" d.91 (63 yr. old Manager)Over 24 years as a manager for the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs and Astros, Durocher won 2,008 total games, three pennants and a World Series. Bill James cited Durocher's method of using his regular players everyday without any rest days as a factor in the Cubs' collapse in '69. Leo's fiery temper earned him his nickname and almost 100 game ejections. Leo wrote an autobiography, Nice Guys Finish Last (1975) titled after a quote attributed to him. He was elected to the HOF in 1994, 3 years after his death. I have 7 of 7 Topps cards autographed. (15 total signed cards) See more of my Leo Durocher collection |
53. 1965 Topps #402 Joe Amalfitano
Joe Amalfitano(35 yr. old Coach)After playing his final game in 1967, Joe became a coach for the Cubs, serving under his first-ever manager, Leo Durocher. Joe later coached the Giants, Padres, Reds and Dodgers and managed the Cubs for parts of 3 seasons. He's currently an instructor for the Giants minor leaguers. I met Joe at a public signing in 2004. I have 9 of 9 Topps cards autographed. (17 total signed cards) See more of my Joe Amalfitano collection |
54. 1960 Topps #463 L.A. Dodgers Coaches (Bobby Bragan / Pete Reiser / Joe Becker / Greg Mulleavy)
Joe Beckerd.98 (61 yr. old Coach)A former catcher, Joe became a pitching coach. Between 1955 and 1970, he was a pitching coach in the NL for the Dodgers (1955–64), Cardinals (1965–66) and Cubs (1967–70). A heart ailment forced his retirement in 1970. Joe died in 1998 at age 89. I have 1 of 1 Topps cards autographed. (3 total signed cards) See more of my Joe Becker collection |
55. 1989 Pacific Legends II #209 Jack Brickhouse
Jack Brickhouse • HOFd.98 (53 yr. old WGN TV announcer)Jack was the play by play voice of the Chicago Cubs on WGN-TV from 1948 to 1981. Jack's famous home run call of “Back, back, back...Hey Hey!” is honored on the Wrigley Field foul poles. Jack received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983. I met Jack and got his autograph at a Chicago charity dinner while a youngster. Jack died in 1998. I have 1 of 1 cards autographed. (3 total signed cards) See more of my Jack Brickhouse collection |

Most impressive collection, and I'm not even an IP auto auto type of collector! | ||
Thanks Billy. I think you'd enjoy all the details I've catalogued involving my autograph collections. Each autographed item includes the date of acquisition, the source and the cost. I too wrote everything down by hand on paper. It all needs to be transferred to an Excel (or Access) doc so I can have better access to the info. I wish I'd kept better records with regards to the costs involved in acquiring the item prior to it being signed. For example, my 1962 Topps signed Jim Hickman only details the cost of acquiring the autograph, but the card itself was probably $40 before it was signed because it's the last card in the set. |
