Fun and Cool Cards I Have on Display

by Vvvergeer - 46 cards (Last updated on Mar 12, 2024)

11. 1911 Turkey Red Cabinets T3 #32 Orval Overall

A few years ago, I learned about these and drooled over them for a bit, and then ruled them out as a possibility because of the expense. Well, in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, after receiving birthday money, I just went for it. I found this one, with a pinhole and other edge flaws, but beautiful.
I love the old stars that people have forgotten/never heard of. This guy won two games in the 1907 World Series and the clinching game in 1908. Depending on the site you go to, he has the 15th lowest earned run average IN HISTORY!
And he's on a beautiful, huge, card. His spot on display is on a special little shelf above all the other cards. He's Over-All of them. (See what I did there?)
Delivered 4/24/20. Ungraded.

12. 1911 Mecca Double Folders T201 #NNO Mordecai Brown / Solly Hofman

Tracked this card for probably a year or more. Just really wanted a double folder and thought Mordecai was the way to go. Feel bad for Hofman, though, who's on the back and not whole. Since the card is graded, only Brown will ever be properly displayed. Also, the T201s are considerably cheaper than T205s or T206s, which made this HOF purchase possible.
So now I have the three fingered pitcher and the six fingered pitcher (Antonio Alfonseca) from the Cubs.
Delivered 4/18/18. BVG 2.

13. 1912 Hassan Triple Folders T202 #NNO Evers Makes a Safe Slide (Jimmy Archer / Ed Reulbach)

Suddenly became obsessed with the triple folders. Then found a card with the only guy who's thrown two shutouts in one day and a guy who gained arm strength when he fell into a vat of boiling sap at 19, with Evers in the middle? All Cubs? Had to have it.
4/24/16. PSA 4.

1915 Cracker Jack (E145) #105 Jimmy Lavender Front

14. 1915 Cracker Jack (E145) #105 Jimmy Lavender

Stalked Cracker Jack Cubs for a few months. The ones I found were always Hall of Famers or graded way out of my price range. But after being patient with my Christmas money, three Cubs came on the market: two SGC 1.5s and a PSA 2. I just missed out on the bidding for the PSA 2, but my offer on Mr. Lavender was immediately accepted (wonder if I offered too much...don't care).

Jimmy Lavender threw a no-hitter for the Cubs in 1915. He also snapped Rube Marquard's 19 game winning streak, the longest in history at the time. Better still, he was once suspected of having an emery board on his pants. When the umpire approached, he ran into the outfield, only to be caught by a Phillies outfielder. This incident led to the punishments for such infractions to be greatly increased, and the spitball eventually to be outlawed. Bad for Jimmy, a spitballer.
As I kicker for me, he was once injured by a ball hit by Fred Merkle. Yeah, Jimmy Lavender checks all the boxes.
2/13/21. SGC 1.5, hence the fuzzy scan.

15. 1916 Sporting News (M101-5) #60 Max Flack

11/20/17. So pleased to have the other half of the between double header trade of Max Flack for Cliff Heathcote. Took me awhile of stalking to get this one. SGC 55, hence the fuzzy scan.

16. 1922 E120 American Caramel Series of 240 #NNO Marty Krug

9/21/20. Kind of a surprise here. Just stumbled into this set on eBay. Didn't have any of them and did not have any cards from 1922. After a little research, Mr. Krug became the obvious choice, since as a scout later in life, he proclaimed Ted Williams too fragile to play baseball. Oops.
PSA 2, hence the fuzzy scan.

17. 1927 Exhibits W461 #NNO Cliff Heathcote

My first card from the 20s. Once I got this, I really needed to find a Max Flack, whom Heathcote was traded for between games of a double header. Both players played for both teams that day. As you can see, I got the Flack.
11/12/17. SGC 40.

18. 1930 Zee-Nut #NNO Charley Jeffcoat

The latest in my quest to get at least one card from every year. Had to go minor league on this one. It's a nice, quirky, card, but I'm a little sad that there's so little information available about the player. I also prefer cards with something on the back, which the cards from the 20s seem to lack. Still, a very nice addition. And pretty cheap, given that it's 93 years old.
I also think it’s cool that, as of now, I’m the only person on tcdb who has this card.

12/5/23. PSA 3

19. 1931 W517 #11 George Kelly

Yet another giant card. But I'm trying to get a card from every year possible, and this 1931 card came up for auction. A HOFer, albeit considered by some to be the worst of all the HOFers. Played on the Cubs and was meant to replace Fred Merkle on the Giants, so that's big for me. And it doesn't hurt that he had a great nickname: High Pockets.

11/6/23. SGC 1

20. 1932 Sanella Margarine #NNO Japanese Baseball Player

This is almost certainly Japanese Hall of Famer Jiro Kuji. I was looking for any card from 1932. eBay kept turning up Babe Ruth cards, and THAT wasn't going to happen, but then I found this. It's kind of amazing. German writing about a Japanese player of an American game. It's also gorgeous.
9/5/23. PSA 4.5.

Nice list Vvvergeer. The tobacco cards are pretty cool. Those cards put into perspective just how long the game of baseball has been around, as well as how much the card industry has evolved. For better or worse. I also have to get some Mays, Banks, and Aaron cards. I like the '73 Aaron for starters.

I love the language on the back of the tobacco cards. Read the descriptions. I'm spoiled, it's true, but I'm a bit annoyed that my oldest Aaron is 1972. He was a star of the 50s and 60s. Must remedy....So many cards, so little budget.

Very nice collection. Brought back a lot of memories. Love the Berra. I own only one tobacco card, bought it just to have one. You think about the years they went through and still survive. Amazing

That was my original thinking on the tobacco cards. I just wanted one, any one. Then I thought it should be a Cub. Then I thought I needed Tinker and Evers and Chance. That took me awhile. Now I want a Fred Merkle. And I'd say that would be the end, but maybe it won't be.

Great list. Your love of cards is similar to mine - the 70s and older are so much more interesting because they were about the player. I only have 5 of these cards in your list but I could make one of similar vintage cards that I treasure the most in my collection. By the way, my display case is mostly Nolan Ryan cards and things.

Thanks. Looks like you've got some nice vintage Bowman baseball. I really need a card or two from the 40s.

Frank Sullivan, huh? Good thing you don't have a best friend named Mickey Mantle!

Keep us up to date on your T207 progress. Ten Cubs, two are HOFers.  I hope you get King Cole next, just because I enjoyed his write-up on the back in the site scan.

Really like the T cards and the Gum cards from the 30s and 40s. I'm going to try and acquire a few of those myself. Great list and excellent display choices.

Some very special ones in there. Many are from an era when baseball was still just a "sport" meant merely to be played, watched, and enjoyed. How times have changed over the past several decades and not just in sports. Great writeups also.

p.s. My sincerest apologies for generating the Forum topic of Baseball Humour. ..nah..not really , just trying to keep it light.

Nice new addition with Warhop.  Although he doesn't look all that happy about it.

Congrats on the Cracker Jack! If I recall correctly you mentioned previously that it was a goal to get one of them?

Thanks for sharing. I just traded for my first Obak T212 recently -  https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/61741/cid/3757259/1909-11-Obak-(T212)-NNO-Ivan-Howard It's the oldest card in my collection. Yeah, I gave up a Mantle for it but have no regrets whatsoever.

My favorite is my '36 Goudey Gehringer https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/9736/cid/408747/1936-Goudey-Wide-Pen-Premiums-(R314-Type-1)--NNO-Charlie-Gehringer with my '49 Bowman Berra a close 2nd - https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/18/cid/26061/1949-Bowman-60-Larry-

Thanks again and enjoy your endeavors!

Museum quality.  I would be awestruck walking into a room full of this stuff.
