My Top 10 Favorite Bret Saberhagen Cards (That I Own)

by midbellman - 10 cards (Last updated on Dec 29, 2014)

10. 1998 Sports Illustrated World Series Fever - MVP Collection #4MC Bret Saberhagen

My Saberhagen collection is mainly based on his career as a Royal. I have a couple of him as a Mets, Rockies, and Red Sox, but not many. When I saw this card I wanted it. Even though it is technically a Red Sox card, I'm considering it a Royals card. Also, it has a George Brett cameo.

9. 1986 Topps Super #3 Bret Saberhagen

If you look at my other posts you will see that my 2 favorite years for Topps is 1975 and 1986. It's not because those were George Brett's and Bo Jackson's rookie years either. It's for the two tone background and the simple designs.

8. 1991 More Little Big Leaguers #NNO Bret Saberhagen

This is another fun set that I own. Some of my best memories as a kid was little league. I wasn't good, but they were good memories. Anything that makes me nostalgic I like.

6. 1990 Bowman - Sweepstakes (Tiffany) #NNO Bret Saberhagen

I like comic, drawn or caricature cards. I said it in the Bo Jackson top ten; I wouldn't mind having the actual lithograph.

5. 1989 Topps/LJN Baseball Talk #92 Bret Saberhagen

The 1989 Topps holds special place in my heart. I wasn't given the complete set for Christmas and I still have it. 25 years later I will that I would have left it sealed in the original box, but I was a kid then. I look at them, studied them, and made mock baseball games out of them. I enjoyed them. Part of me is happy that didn't just store them away. Saying that, I saw these talking sets in the store and the device to put them in and could never convince my parents to get me some.

4. 1988 Score - Wax Box Bottom Panels Singles #9 Bret Saberhagen

Box cards fascinate me. I had a couple when I was a kid. I remember being happy to see that I was buying the last pack of cards from a box, and the perk of that was that I got to keep the box.

3. 1992 Topps Kids #107 Bret Saberhagen

Some cards make me laugh. This is a kid’s card, correct? I sure they could have superimposed a head shot picture of Saberhagen that didn't show him with a wad of chaw in his cheek, right? Oh well.

2. 1984 Fleer Update #U-103 Bret Saberhagen

You can't have a top ten and not have a rookie card in it. I'm not a fan of Donruss or Fleer, but I liked this rookie card over the Topps.

1. 1988 Kansas City Royals Smokey #16 Bret Saberhagen

No surprises here. This is my all-time favorite team set of the royals. I dare to go look at all of the cards in this set and not smile. Do you agree with my list? What are your favorite cards from this era? I would love to read comments from other collectors and respond.

Saberhagen was awesome, he just had a few unfortunate injuries. He'll always be a fan-favorite though. The '86 Topps set is simplistic, but often over looked in my opinion, and that's a very nice card of Bret from that set.

I agree about 1986. To most it's a very forgettable set, but one of my favorites.

I like that fact that they used a red background for box cards to change it up.
