Ellis's first major league hit was a 2-run double on May 1, 1987 off Urbano Lugo of the California Angels. Red Sox won the game 12-3. His first big league home run was also against the Angels on May 10, off Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton, Red Sox won 7-0. On June 10, Ellis had a double and 2 home runs, 2 walks, 4 runs scored and 7 RBIs in a 15-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
