Year: 2002

Set: Fleer Platinum (Rate)

Card: #168 David Boston

“ I like the little things about this card, namely the high school goal posts on the front and back that give it that nostalgic feel which I'm sure was the intent. ” -Sportzcommish

“ Gotta love those Ohio State jail birds. ” -carthage44

“ Took me a second to realize the green trapezoid in the bottom left corner is a mini football field w/ goal post. Whether it's football or baseball, I always liked Fleer's 'retro' offerings. ” -mkaz80

“ Finally I get to comment on a football card. Nice looking card; a throwback to the 1960 set. I don't like that there aren't stats on the back. They could have kept the retro look and improved upon the original by adding stats. ” -cnangle

“ Just not feeling this one. ” -kirkscards

“ Chicago Cardinals - St Louis Cardinals - Phoenix Cardinals - Arizona Cardinals Oh, how I hate change. Btw, the original Chicago Cardinals were named for the color not the bird. ” -NJDevils

“ Kinda retro yet not at the same time. I like it. ” -rmpaq5

“ 2nd Buckeye this month!! Boston had potential but he was too concerned with beefing up his muscles, probably not within the rules. But man did I love watching him against Woodson and That Team Up North! ” -Brimose

I still don't understand why this set's name was Platinum. There is nothing Platinum or even fancy/shiny about this set. It is some form of Fleer Tradition that was used around the same time that this set was released. This is about the time that Fleer/Skybox lost a ton of ground to the other companies too. Fleer and Skybox really should have stuck with their releases of Fleer Premium, Ultra, Metal/Metal Universe, Impact, and Dominion from that era. Those 5 brands would have probably led to a longer life for the companies after they merged. They were all affordable products that were interesting to both the young and old collectors. I certainly understand the fall of Fleer/Skybox much better now.

Fleer fell because of the super high end sets. They spent more money than they had on trying to aquire things to cut up and put on a "super-premium" high priced set that never came out. Specifically, they were buying up, among other things, the team logo placquards that  were set up at the draft lottery for the NBA.

The Platinum name was first used in place of Tradition to reference the anniversary of Fleer's first set. Of course, Tradition had been added to the flagship Fleer for some reason in the late 1990s. For a short time both Platinum and Tradition were released,

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

Love these retro sets. I think I have said that before. This one is the 1960 Fleer Football design.
