Year: 1984

“ Just a base card from one of the flagship sets I grew up on. It doesn't get better than that. 1984 is one of my favorite Topps sets for sure, and even though they are a rival of my team, I always like the look of a Pirates card because the uniforms are so cool. ” -switzr1

I still like this design! IMO, one of the best front designs from the 80's b/c it has all the info you really need and stays simple. With 2 different pics of the player, a team name, player name & position and a Topps logo, everything fits well. The back is a standard 80's back for any brand (and I wish that would return to the hobby en-masse). The only changes I would ever make to the design would be adding team logos. One on the back might be nice if you could find the space for it. I would rather have one on the front though. In the case of this card, it would work nearly anywhere. I would want symmetry though and would have to put it top-left of the pic or bottom-right of the picture in every card in the set.

I sure wish Topps would get back to making sets like this that aren't COPIES of sets like this!!!

This set is what got me started in the hobby as a kid. I still remember going to the big box toy store (RIP Child's World) and buying 132 card uncut sheet for like a buck or 2. My brother and I really took the scissors to those! Still one of my favorites to this day.

Me too. I like Heritage and some-what Archives, but Archives is a bit much. They use too many designs with Archives and have already repeated several once, twice or more. The 1971 design has been WAY overused. By the time Heritage does the '71 design collectors will already have a couple dozen '71 design cards of each player in that set.
