Year: 2003-04

Set: Upper Deck Beehive (Rate)

Card: #178 Gary Roberts

“ I know a lot of Leafs fans who should be happy seeing this throwback card come up as card of the Day. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Always an appealing set. ” -KMack

“ I suppose there is a reason behind the name "beehive", but it's not evident from the card design (no honeycomb backdrop, for instance). The front is elegant, although the frame is a bit on the wide side. The back is a nice example for others to follow, with stats (at least last five years), team logo, name, card year, position and card number all easily seen and in logical places. ” -kents_stuff

“ Never saw these before, but I really like the look. Two thumbs up! ” -muskie027

“ Not a bad throwback, and the fact it's a Leaf makes me want it. However, it would be amusing if they went with black and white staged photos like the originals. ” -DanD

“ Never saw these before, but I really like the look. Two thumbs up! ” -muskie027

“ Cool retro style type card, even it isn't a "retro" card. Nice framed picture card reminiscent of the Turkey Red brand. ” -captkirk42

“ Nice enough card. I would collect these. ” -switzr1

Saw somebody question the "Beehive" name - Beehive was a brand of corn syrup which issued large (5"x8"ish) woodgrain photos of NHL players from the 1940s through the 1960s. Pinnacle first revived it as brand name for similar oversize hockey cards in 1997-98. Upper Deck later acquired the brand name and somewhere along the way started using it for standard sized cards (with the classic woodgrain border look) as well as oversized cards.
