Year: 1996

Set: Wheels Crown Jewels Elite - Emerald (Rate)

Card: #53 Steve Hmiel / Mark Martin

“ I loved this set when it was new...now, not so much. But at least it has some early SN parallels. Back when it came out I was wowed by the fake backgrounds, now I dislike them. That's a lugnut, the part that holds the wheels on the car, in case anyone is wondering. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ As far as racing cards go this is the best I have seen in a while. Driver on the front and car on the back. ” -davidhandberry

“ I don't know what's going on with this card. The background is way too busy for me. The back screams "We don't know what we're doing but we're gonna try anyway." ” -Soldan

“ Racing again Ma! First saw the back because my cursor was hovering over the card. Hmiel? Sounds German. Saw "Hmiel - Martin" and thought it was a team name, or maybe one guy two photos for some weird reason. Back looks nice than front. I guess the background for the front is kind of foil-like? Or that "Metal" semi-chrome look. ” -captkirk42

“ Like the name plate design on the front. On the back, however, the name should of just went across the top, instead of down the side and blocking part of the view of his ride. Makes it seem like the race car was an after thought, imo. ” -CollectingAfterDeath

“ I have no interest in NASCAR, much less its trading cards. But this strikes me as a decent design with car image, driver image, and I'm guessing either owner or crew chief image. (I can't quite read the back on my PC, but I presume it tells me.) ” -kents_stuff

Crown Jewels cards were highly sought after when they first arrived. They weren't too common to find then and they still aren't easy to find now. I do know that I still need this one for my Mark Martin collection. It's a good looking card to me.

For those that don't know, Steve Hmiel was Mark's crew chief. He's the guy in the earpiece telling Mark when he needs to pit for tires and/or fuel and how much of what they are taking. He's also the guy that Mark fusses to when the car isn't working right for him. Steve has to figure out how to make it race faster or handle better.
