Random Card of the Day

Year: 2004

Set: Topps 1st Edition (Rate)

Card: #187 Aubrey Huff

“ The 1st Edition cards are NOT parallels. They were issued in packs and boxes of their own, about half the size as the regular hobby box. There were no inserts or parallels to be found in the 1st Edition boxes. They were literally just the same as the base cards other than the foil 1st Edition logo. They were only available at Home Team Advantage dealers. Even though they serve almost no real purpose I bought them every year in my sport. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Not a bad card. Aubrey Huff had a few good years. ” -muskie027

“ One of the bland white border Topps cards from the early 2000's on to about 2014 I believe. I can't tell most of them apart. I wasn't collecting at this time and am catching up. Is 1st edition like Opening Day? If not what is the difference? ” -davidhandberry

“ Wow. Maybe I'm not observant, or maybe I've never seen one. But I loved the border silhouettes on '73 Topps and '63 Fleer and such. But to actually use the card's photo image as the basis of the silhouette is even better somehow. Pretty cool, in my book. ” -kents_stuff

“ 2004 Topps around the time I started to return to the hobby. It took me a couple of years to realize that the little cartoon image on the bottom was in the exact pose the player was in, not just a generic position character like the early 70s cards from Football. Dang 1st edition with the only difference being the foil stamped "1st Edition" logo (and how it was distributed I think).Oh Yes I do like this design, back pretty standard modern Topps design. ” -captkirk42

“ Great picture. I love that the little guy in the corner matches the player. ” -cjjt

@Billy-

I always considered 1st Edition cards parallels in my personal collection, simply because they “paralleled” the base set. However, I didn’t realize they were listed as such here (not sure why, maybe I just don’t pay attention). It would seem to me that you’re spot on, that they should be their own separate release, based on site precedence. Has Admin ever given a reason for this? Or is this something we could get changed? If it’s possible to change it, as I said, I would be in agreement with you unless there’s something I’m missing?

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

I have no clue Jason. I suspect it may have been to make it easy to copy and paste the teams over.

But they are a fully standalone set. just using the same checklist, not unlike Topps Chrome or Topps/OPC.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

This would be a very easy fix (well, Admin would have to do it, but it's still easy), but we would need to know where all these sets are lurking. If someone would be so kind as to go through and submit IRs to get these listed properly (I 100% agree with Billy on this, and I believe Admin will as well), we can get the ball rolling on these. (Also, if whoever submits these can just say so here before you start so we don't have 5 of the same request, and drop me a PM with a list of the sets when you're done with it all, I'd really appreciate it!!)

I'll do it. Some might have packaging to move as well, pretty sure I uploaded my box from 2003-04.

OK, think I got them all. 3 in NBA, 3 in NFL, 2 in Baseball.

A query: The cards are ALL listed as 1st Edition on each card and packaging. Most of them listed here have it spelled out as "First Edition". That's not really correct but I don't know if I should change them to match the cards and packaging.
