Random Card of the Day

Year: 1975

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #395 Ron Johnson

“ I presume this was taken at training camp, which would account for the lack of a uniform. At least you can see his face. The back design is a bit unusual but I rather like it. ” -John Kerry

“ 70s cards are cool in any sport. The back is really cool on this design. Without the helmet, this front design could be used for any sport. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I like that it is old but this is not a well done front. The picture looks so generic, nothing looks like football at all. The football helmet looks weird to me. Pink and yellow should never be used together, especially on a football card. As much as the front bothers me, the back is amazing. I would give the front a 3 and the back a 10. ” -davidhandberry

“ Six years in the league and the best photo they can come up with is a portrait of him basically standing in a park in street clothes? ” -rmpaq5

“ RIP, he just passed away on the 10th. ” -carthage44

“ Ron Johnson. All Time chill name team. Great looking card. Love this set. ” -parsley24

“ Not bad card. ” -Kirbythedodger

“ A familiar face, as he is currently on the home page In Memoriam. Been seeing him for a few days now. ” -switzr1

“ Cool 1975 Vintage Football! Like a zillion other 1975 football cards I probably need this one for the set. Of the 528 cards in the set I only have 15 listed here. I KNOW I have much more than that total in my card hoard. ” -captkirk42

“ Ron Johnson died 5 days ago. Incredible running back at the University of Michigan. First black captain at the school. "Johnson was an All-American for the Wolverines in 1968 when he set a school record that still stands with 347 yards rushing against Wisconsin. He ran for 1,391 yards that season and scored a school-record 19 touchdowns, another record that still stands." -- Associated Press He had a few good years in the pros. He will be missed. GO BLUE. Terrible card. ” -cjjt

“ Wonderful card and I love the pin ballish design on the back. I never understood the colors though and why they didn't always align to the teams back in the day. Whatever though, a complete set of these would be awesome! ” -muskie027

“ Vintage Football and something I purchase when I was child. ” -kirkscards

“ nice classic topps design, always wondered why they made the helmet with a smashed facemask though ” -Thunderfoot

“ This is what 1982 was able to improve upon when Topps got the proper licensing. ” -Splinter_9

The first pack of cards I ever got was 1975 Topps.  I remember a couple of players I got, and one was a Giant using what looks like those same trees.

Would have been nice to use the team colors for the ribbon and helmet designs.

This was my 2nk year of collecting . Also 1 , with the 1976 year , that I like a lot !

-------------------------------

I"m trying to finish up my 1975,1976 & 1977 Hostess card sets and build on the 1978 & 1979 sets. I'm also working on the Post cards in 1961-63 and Jello cards . 1968 Round playing card game  is also being worked on, along with some other Odd ball sets .

Splinter hit it right on the nose. Topps didn’t get football licensing until some time later (he said 1982, and that may he correct, I have no idea), so many football cards were basic shots like this. I remember flipping through my dads collection as a kid and getting all excited when I came across an air-brushed “In Action” subset, as it was the only in game shots found for the time period.

-------------------------------

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.
