Random Card of the Day

Year: 1989-90

Set: TG Racing Masters of Racing (Rate)

Card: #136 Neil Castles' Car

“ Love this set. Covers the early history of the sport better than any other. (Despite the somewhat non-sequitur nature of this writeup) I used to like this guy based solely on the fact that he had a funny nickname, and drove a car with a zero in front of the number, something I've always gravitated towards for some reason. Then I found out more about him, and let's just say I'm no longer a fan. Actually one of my least favorite people in the sport's history in fact. Became a Hollywood stuntman after leaving NASCAR and worked there well into the 1990s. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Nice racing card. I admit I laughed at the title "Soapy" on the front of the card. Now I'm wondering how he got that nickname. ” -captkirk42

“ Brrrrm brrm brrrrrrrrrrrrrm !!!! ” -YoRicha

“ I like it. Cool car photo on the front. Informative back. And his name is Soapy. What's not to like? ” -switzr1

Billy, you could be a Buzz Feed headline writer! Your write up made me research more about this guy.  I can't find anything about him that would make him particularly unsavory.  Can you elaborate?

I did the same, OC, and found stories of racism (frequently intentionally wrecking a black driver) and general dishonesty (taking a sponsor's money to buy his wife a fur coat rather than fix his car).  Never would have looked if not for Billy's remark.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Eek - I promise I did not find those types of stories before I posted my comment!

I believe you. I had to word my search several different ways to find it myself.

That's exactly it. After I became friends with Wendell Scott's family I learned some things about some people that I didn't know before, and makes me feel bad for ever considering myself a fan of those people.

I'm not sure if what I was told was in confidence or not, so I won't repeat it, but it left me fuming.

Nice action picture of a 1970 Charger, border goes with it.not much of a fan of NASCAR, but easier to buy than a NHRA version of same cars. Only thing I can add would be if 71 season not sure why he would use that body style as 71 was a better race design, not as great as the newly banned Daytonas/Superbirds, I am not sure but wasn't 6 a Buddy Baker number that year?

His nickname came from his early days racing in the soapbox derby.

Most of the self funded drivers back then used older equipment, as it was cheaper and still mostly competitive. This is actually the Daytona with new sheet metal on it in all likelihood. 6 was indeed Buddy Baker at that time.

I thought it would be a Daytona or 500 remoded but back window and front pillars are wrong so it more inline with 70 body style. I am currently waiting for Sat's cars at Kissimmee, the 1971 43 RR tribute car built by Petty's Garage goes up. it would be 3rd Petty car if lucky

Cool, I have not seen that one yet.

The guys that had the Daytonas generally had a non- Daytona for the short tracks, this may have for that as well.
