Year: 2005

Set: Topps Total - Silver (Rate)

Card: #212 Dave Ragone

“ Loved Topps Total concept. Great simple design back a little too colorful though and uses same photo. ” -captkirk42

“ Uh oh, it looks like a UER. They left off his nickname and misspelled his last name. It's Dave "Going Going" Urgone. And on the back "Releases Quickly" should read "Released Quickly". ” -C2Cigars

“ I spotted a typo. From the look of his career, the back should have read "Released Quickly". ” -DanD

“ Gotta love a player bio that includes both "Did not play in '04" and "After a year of sitting..." Apparently he did make the team with the Texans in '05, but didn't get to play in any games. Now he's an assistant coach for the Bears. NIce front. I'm indifferent toward parallels. I keep them, but don't pursue them. ” -switzr1

“ Who? ” -Splinter_9

“ This card shows just about everything I hate about Topps, boring design, parallel that is the same as the base card just changing a border, posed action photos. I do like the tracker on the back, telling about his past and future but one positive and 50 negatives is still a bad card. The only thing about the front I can say nicely is I like the secondary border with the team colors, if they had used that for the outside border and hadn't made several parallels the front could have been good. ” -davidhandberry

“ I love Topps Total. All the players. Everyone gets a card. Total! ” -cjjt

“ total was one of my favorite sets when I t was around, it was cheap but I love the non glossy finish the cards had ” -Thunderfoot

“ Maybe some day Topps will listen to a large swatch of collectors and resurrect the Topps Total brand. (But probably not cos the pack searching, lottery-ticket buying 'mah four-color patch and sticker auto' collector writes the narrative of the day.) I'd trade Opening Day and Gypsy Queen to get Total back. Or maybe they can expand Big League to have a larger even more-inclusive checklist. ” -mkaz80

“ A giant meh. I think I remember Ragone from college. Too bad I couldn't confirm that on the back. It just seems like there is a lack of design creativity for the last 20 years or so. Maybe I am just being whiny because it is late. ” -muskie027

2003 and 2004 Topps Total were so much better than the 2005 design. I don't care about the player and that's what several previous comments focused on for this set. Card of the Day is more about the set and design to me than any specific player. The 2005 set did not have a back as focused as the 2003/04 sets and even the 2006 set was better. Topps Total was a fantastic product for cheap.

It's funny/odd/ironic that this was a RCOTD right when Topps releases info about the return of Topps Total. Unfortunately, the new Total is going to be a complete BUST!!! Nobody is paying $1 per card to get punters, kickers and 3rd-string players. I hope the wreckage costs Topps millions of dollars to force them to never do this again in that way. Bring it back in the way it was in the early-2000's and the collectors will buy it. Selling them at a buck-a-piece in random packs is not the way to release this product. Horrible idea!
