Oldest Cavalry Unit. Awesome looking card, looks like it straight out of the Army lineage book.

At first glance I thought maybe 1875 certainly not 1975. Looks much older. Cool set and a dream set for all those American history aficionados out there in TCDB land.

Too bad it isn't a card.   Stickers don't age well.

The day after this card was listed as the COD, I found a complete set at an antique store. I had to buy it and at only $10 I felt it was a bargain. I started scanning those that were missing from TCDB and noticed a copyright line VAR.....ugh!!! All cards were inserted into loaves of bread from various bakeries from '75-'76 with Sunbeam being the most prominent.

A little research led to 3 actual VARs.

  1. 1975 Fleer Copyright
  2. 1976 Quality Bakers Copyright with "fold corner" instructions
  3. 1976 Quality Bakers Copyright with "Bend at split" instructions

I have two questions:

  1. Should the release date be changed to 1975-1976 or should a separate 1976 listing be created?
  2. Should this be listed as VAR's or as a parallel set? With the new(ish) master set feature, I think VAR. This allows those of us who don't care about copyright variations create a basic set regardless of which copyright line we have. Listing as a parallel set does not provide that functionality.

I'm going to stop uploading images to allow for comments and then I'll go to Admin for a ruling.

I would say the 1976 release must be it's own set. Listing them as parallels would be the best way to catalog them, but I'm sure they will end up as variations.

I would think parallel.  VAR is usually used when only some of the cards are affected, right?  Like those Donruss factory sets?

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

If you type in 1976 Quality Bakers National Flag Foundation in to the search, is it going to show up if it's listed in the 1975 Fleer listing? It certainly would not if listed as variations. And you would never be able to have a complete set showing if they are all mushed together.
