I think it is worth it, as Jason said given to 6th graders with 5000 sets made might not sound rare but given that most kids likely played with them instead of storing them for the future means there could be less sets available then first thought, I was lucky to get mine but missing 2 cards (advertised as complete but had doubles of two cards, luckily I found the 2 on eBay) but I have only seen I think 3 sets for sale in past 5 years.
if your a pro set collector pick it up while you can because it may be awhile before the next one comes up for sale , also if you like rare there is a 1989 pro set error / variations set for sale on eBay for around $650, these were created to highlight the errors and changes made for the set, not bad value as you get 2 x 1988 pro set test sets, Santa cards plus the majority of errors / variations, this has the C versions of Bynes and Riggs whereas mine has the D versions plus the 3 series 2 promo cards
