Set: Fleer (Rate)

Card: #467 Wally Joyner

“ These cards felt weird, like they were printed on really thick construction paper. ” -UNC_Samurai

“ Remember when Wally Joyner had the most sought after rookie card in the industry back in 1986. ” -EdTheStatMan

“ Uninspired design (and non-glossy finish). Looks like 1996 Fleer. As for the player - Wallyworld! ” -vrooomed

“ Weird set here. Was like they used cardboard to print on and the quality was very sub par. Must have been vegetable based inks. ” -addysdaddy

“ Joyner played from 1986-2001 with the Angels (two different times), Royals, Padres and Braves. Career Stats: .289 Average, 204 Home Runs and 1,106 RBI. He was an All-Star in his rookie season (1986) and was also Co-Champion (w/Darryl Strawberry) of the Home Run Derby that same season. Joyner is currently serving as the Detroit Tigers hitting coach. ” -carthage44

“ I like the road grays on front and home whites on back. ” -jlaz10

I actually really liked this set, and the '96 Fleer before it. The return to non-glossy cards was nice, and these were excellent for autographs.

I remember the backlash this set design caused when the 1997-98 Fleer NBA set was released. I remember Fleer going in Beckett and saying it was because the non- glossy card front was easier to get autographs on. At the time I despised them, but now, years later, I actually really like the design, and consider it the last truly great Fleer set. (for the NBA, at least). There were glossy parallels- Crystal, which were not easy to find, and Tiffany, which were somewhat rarer, and featured blue holofoil in place of the standard gold foil. I believe I only got one of them. When they were new I liked them more than the base cards, but now it's the other way around. One thing's for sure, it's unique, I can't think of any other mainstream set to do that.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.
