Year: 2002

Set: Upper Deck 40-Man (Rate)

Card: #972 Lance Davis

“ ... Boring card with same photo on the back... and over 900 cards is way too many! ” -jefferies9

“ A valiant effort Upper Deck, but the world does not need more sets populated mostly by players no one knows or will ever know. Let Bowman take care of that angle. Generally nice design though. The company logo doesn't need to take up so much space, but it is otherwise original and interesting but not over the top. ” -dilemma19

“ The transparent name is not necessary. ” -carthage44

“ Another nice back to basics card from after the junk years. ” -captkirk42

“ I like the design, and would not mind a new try at a similar concept with today's players...although I don't think there would be enough demand to do it every year ” -mzentko

“ Not familiar with this card but I like cards with good logo placements. However I am not a fan of the early-mid 2000's obsession in baseball with adding black to uniforms. Royals had a phase during this time as well. ” -RoyalChief

I like the larger set concept. While most players don't last in the bigs. At least they get a card to show they made it. Get tired of the smaller sets showing the same 100 players.

I agree with nicksang 100%.  While I don't think every set needs the full 40-man roster, I don't mind seeing one per year.  As a team collector, and also a fan who watches my team almost every night, it would assure me that I could get a card of every player on the team, in a Cardinals uniform, and I'm sure other team collectors would feel the same way about their teams.  I can get a ton of Yadier Molina cards in a Cardinals uniform, but Seth Maness didn't have one single card in 2014, and almost got missed in 2015 too.  (Thanks Topps Update!)  And he had a combined 149 relief appearances in those two years.  Sure, a Padres fan wouldn't likely care, but I want to be able to have at least one Seth Maness card every year.  He's a VERY important part of our team!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
