Anybody else look in the bottom right of the site and see the article about the PSA 9 1952 Topps Mantle selling yesterday for $2.88 million? And that's not even, technically, his rookie card.
Don't have much to add. I guess it just goes to show that vast range of types of collectors there are out there. I just hope no one here was disappointed by bidding a mere $2.87 million for it.

I saw that. If I was rich I'd buy one. I'd be happy with a PSA 5 though. Crazy money though.

yeh i got slightly outbid on that one.. crazy to have pocket money like that. wonder if ppl of that stature do it for the "just because I can"

If I owned and sold that card and with that kind of money
1. It would be delivered in person
2. I would have a contract saying that the person must show a proof of identity
3. a signature that he recieved the card.
4. and I would file it for the rest of my life so they could not try and get their money back

That's an interesting angle. Is Mathis a collector, then? I would love to know how he got the Mantle in the first place. He obviously didn't pull it from a pack when he was a kid.

Here's an interview with Evan Mathis that aired during the first day of the auction. Sounds like he is a collector and had to trade most of his collection and some substantial cash to obtain it in the first place. Another article I read mentioned that he wanted to sell it to buy his family's dream home. I think he made $4M base salary his season with the Broncos a few years ago and probably received more with performance bonuses and incentives with the Super Bowl win that year. Must be quite the dream house!
