Even though I live in DC, I'm not a big hockey guy and, other than being an avid Nats supporter, I admit to mildly rooting against the teams here, especially the Redskins. I think it's because they all think they'll win it all every year and they never do (well, not the Wizards, who are just kind of sad). Might be because I grew up watching mostly losers, especially the Cubs, who never believed they'd win anything, so it was refreshing when they did.
All that said, I sincerely congratulate the Caps on finally getting it done. I like to see long-time stars on a team reach the very top (probably because I watched Banks and Sandberg fail to get there). So I'm glad for Ovi and all the quite rabid hockey fans in this city. Also, I have noticed no riots or property damage, and I'm only a couple blocks from the arena right now. So yay DC!
Besides, I think it would be a bit embarassing to the NHL if an expansion team won it all in their first year. That sure couldn't happen in baseball.
So, after all the self-analysis and negative comments, I will say, earnestly, "Well done, Capitals. You truly deserve it."
