A few months ago I had purchased a 5000 count box of baseball cards . In the box were about 500 1994 Score baseball cards that were stuck together in 3 huge blocks . In the past I would attempt to separate them and every method I would try would damage the cards at least a little bit . With that in mind , I didn't think it was worth the time to try and get them apart so I stuck them in an old 3200 count box that had no lid and stuck them in the garage until I could decide what to do with them. I figured that I can't make them any worse out there . Well, I had forgot they were out here till the other day when I was putting away our Christmas decorations and I was moving stuff around and found the box . When I grab a stack of cards out I realized that the cards had all become unstuck from each other and that there was no visable damage to any of the cards . I checked the rest of them anxt td every card unstuck without damage . The temperature in the garage has gotten down to the low 40's F . I don't know if this is a fluke or if there is something to this but to be sure , I will try this again the next time I have cards stuck together . I just wanted to share .
Thanks for reading ,
Matt

Sweet!!! I never got that lucky on some of the stuff I got that was stuck together. Closest I got was a '01 Topps factory set (gold box). When I got it a year ago it was 1 large brick. I tried several tricks mentioned in the forums, but no luck. Destroyed about 10 cards and decided to stick it in a corner. Last month I was cleaning out some stuff and gave it one last shot before sending it to recycling. Somehow many started peeling off nice and easy. I saved 200ish of the cards, but sadly Ichiro didn't make it (well to recycling he did...).

I stuck some in my freezer for about six months, as an experiment. No success.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Thanks for your post, mheilenman. I’ve had the same issue with 1994 Topps. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get into the low 40s here in Southern California very often! I’ve used Shawn’s suggested method before. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Thanks for sharing Matt. I'm guessing it was a combo of atmospheric circumstances that separated them. Getting them cold but not freezing made them stiffer. But I'd think some moisture in the air would help the gloss loosen its hold from one card to the next.
I've also done the method Shawn posted earlier many times over the years. Again, that is always hit-or-miss and really depends on the cards themselves. It is much more effective on sealed packs of cards than thick stacks of cards that aren't packaged. I recently had that issue with a bunch of 1993 Finish Line Racing cards. The cards in packs mostly came apart without damage (I'd say 80% success), but a stack I found smushed between two boxes of cards had the opposite result when trying to get them apart, even with taking longer per card trying to separate them.

When science and baseball cards collide. This topic could have been featured on an episode of Beakman's World.
