I was wondering what other members thought about card trimming and other forms of card doctoring. I personally am not opposed to the actual act of trimming, but hate how people use it to scam others and make money. What do you guys think?

No, heck no and oh he!! no. Doctoring in any way, shape or form is a no-no for me. The shape they are is the way they should be enjoyed and each have their own preference on what they want in their collection. This is especially so when it comes to vintage.
I will take a step back and say this though, if a person's intent is to never share it with the public (i.e sell or trade) what they do with their card(s) is on them. With vintage though, there are only so many left to go around and they should be left be for others to enjoy. Personally, I have seen doctored cards explicitly advertised on eBay and have avoided like the plague. I'd rather have a more dinged up card than something that has been altered.

Why would anyone trim a card?

Big, fat, hard NO!!! Under absolutely no circumstances is trimming okay. Even if you do it for your own collection and you don't intend to ever sell those cards, think about the future. Maybe your kids will want to sell the cards after you are gone. Will they know the cards have been altered?
Yeah, big time no for me. I don't believe it is ever okay.

While I’m not in favor of doctoring cards it is interesting to consider all the other areas of collectibles where “doctoring” aka restoring something is acceptable. Collector cars, paintings, antiques be it toys or furniture. Originals command a premium but restoring something isn’t nearly as shameful as it seems to be in the collector card hobby. Not saying it’s right or wrong just interesting.

There's no place for it in the hobby.

It should be illegal to sell them that way. There should be jail time involved.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
