You occasionally see this on hockey, football and baseball cards but primarily in basketball cards. I enjoy seeing HOFers in the background on commons cards. I imagine if you are collector of a certain player you would go after these cards.. Came across another today so I thought I finally would mention this topic. 1981-82 #59 76ers TL card has Larry Bird in the foreground. I know have seen Jordan, Magic and others on other cards. One thought I can delete from my meager brain.

You should check out the 1990-91 Hoops #223a, it is weird to see Michael Jordan in something other than #23.

There are some people who collect cards if their favorite player appears in the background (or occasionally foreground as you mention) but I don't really track that- I am going to collect the cards anyway, LOL!
What I AM starting to keep track of, however, is when a player who does not have his own cards appears on somebody else's. I will do a blog post (or posts) about it at some point. I need to research it more though, so it's several years off. Jorge Guitarrez played 4 years in the NBA, half with the Nets, but got no cards. He did, finally, appear defending somebody on a card in 2016-17. I forgot which one, though, which means my research needs to be written down, my memory is not to be trusted.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards

I've heard of player collectors with extensive "cameo" collections. They go to great lengths to identify even the blurriest, most obscure appearances of their guy. It's amazing the level of research that can be done, down to tracking specific line-ups for specific games to know if their guy might have been on base or on deck during a particular teammate's at-bat or a particular pitcher's appearance.
Along the same lines, some player collectors also seek out cards which include mentions of their guy in the text on the back.
To each their own. I find I have enough Olerud cards to chase without looking for cameo's, but I can understand the attraction.

I heard that the rarest card is not the Honus Wagner, but one of Olerud without the helmet. Is that true?

No, the rarest card is Joe Shlabotnik.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I may be one of the few who know who Joe Shlabotnik is. After all, look at my photo.
