Being one of the newbies I find this intriguing. But being a realest I can also see how some will Try and take advantage. After all, there is always someone that will break the chain. It is a human trait to take advantage of the weak.
I myself have many doubles and is not a big thing to give to others. You can't take it with you, has been instilled in me by good parents. I would never trade a subpar card, nor the hopes of taking advantage of another. I've given many cards to the neighborhood kids when I deem a card, not worthy, Well, we just wind up sending crappy cards to each other?
Who "Dr?" will be the worthy ones? Who will be the user? We all know we are only talking about common cards. That is fine, only a fool...
Thinking of this proposal. I think it would be good. for newbie and for friends. I myself have already received a few extra cards in a trade. a wonderful surprise. I have also made a trade with mzentko That left me in the dark for a week. but was like X-mass when I opened it and had me dumbfounded that someone I did not know would do so much for my collection. This has also lead me to drop an extra card in trades for fun. The people here I've found have been a wonderful surprise and this could work. But there will be some that won't play fair. One bad apple could, but will the majority let it?
Maybe a listing would be the answer. Those who will and have already done, could be nominated by others and this would open a list for the address. There is going to have to be a control or the one sour apple will distort the view for all. and to all who except and propose a trade I except, till the end of the year enjoy the extra card. My pay forward for the website. If you don't want it just pass it on. It would be fun if I wound up getting one back. :)

RJ, not sure you're addressing the focus of the Pay It Forward. It doesn't matter if it's commons or stars, vintage or modern. No one is compelled to give anything, be it extra cards in a trade, cards for a birthday, or just because they wish to send a card (or cards) to meet someone's Want List. I'm not sure how someone can take advantage of another by sending cards in that manner.
Also, I didn't really follow what your suggestion at the end of your post is. Would you clarify, please>?

The beauty of the Pay It Forward movement is simply one person wanting to do something special for another. And if you don't want to, nothing is saying you have to. No one should feel obligated to continue it. Someone had to start it, and people are constantly doing it without looking for "compensation."
Do it if you want. Don't do it if you don't want.
No one should feel obligated to participate in this.

I have sent out about $10 worth of PWE in the pay it forwards. No big deal. I plan on doing more as I get time. Just hoping to help a fellow collector. I have received a few. (Thanks) but I have never feel obligated to do it. I have never looked for compensation. Some of the guys that I have sent cards to do not even have football cards. All the people I have sent cards to do not have cards I need.

RJ,
As a newbie myself I was a little slow off the mark to participate in this movement. Let me just say that PIFing is fun, satisfying and rewarding to my inner self. Like you reference X-Mas, the giving far exceeds the receiving. Just last week I saw a box of whatever and thought, OK lets see whom I could send some to. A little wantlst research, packaging, and a post-it note to self to remove said cards from DB.Next day at the post office away they go. It felt great!
If you are concerned about a "sour apple" ruining this chain, you are mistaken. Any one trying to advance some sort of personal agenda or "won't play fair" with PIF is not going to get very far. You know what they say about Karma.
I may be speaking out of turn for others but there is no way a list or another measuring stick is going to be developed to see who has and who hasn't. It's NOT about that. Nobody is looking for recognition or gain.
Have fun with it!
Kari

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.
