Well, I have to ask a dumb question. Since I got back into collecting in 2015, I have been able to figure out most things. There are a couple I haven't figured out, so, I have to swallow my pride and ask, even though I feel like these are softballs. Rather than post my rookie questions all at once, I figure I'll ask one every once in a while. Here i #1.
I have opened a few 2017 Topps packs and got old cards that are stamped "Rediscover Topps." Are these just old cards Topps still had in store and put a stamp on them and reissued? Are they reprints? How do they pick the players? The ones I got seem pretty obscure. Also, are these the same as a Topps Buyback? What exactly is a Buyback? Does Topps actually buy something back from you? Were these cards bought back by Topps and stamped "Rediscover Topps"? I feel like this is a ridiculous question, but I haven't figured it out yet. Thanks!

These cards were bought back by Topps and stamped "Rediscover Topps". Not reprints. Some collectors think that Topps has defiled old cards by putting these stamps on them. Some collectors love them.

The Buybacks and Rediscover Topps cards are indeed vintage cards that found their way back to Topps and have been STAMPED with the "buyback" logo and reissued. I'm pretty sure the "Rediscover Topps" is the same sort of thing. It is a hot topic and pretty mixed with collectors. Personally I don't like it I think it ruins the card. Some collectors disagree and think they are super cool. I do agree they are cool in that that are original cards, but as soon as they get the buyback stamp they are knocked down to the lowest possible condition grade. I have no idea how they pick which ones to re-release to the public.

You have it right. Buyback is a general term for when old cards are "re-acquired" by the manufacturer (maybe they were still in a warehouse or maybe they were bought) and put into new packs, often with some sort of modification to identify it as such, like your foil stamped Rediscover Topps. Some people don't like these, but I actually do. I've seen it said that these were cards that Topps still had stored away. I've also seen marked checklists with the stamp, so I don't believe that. We will never really know how many cards were re-released, or who they all were. And they have been doing it for a few years now, with the stamp looking different each year, so they're basically creating parallel sets from years when parallels didn't exist. They mostly seem to use commons, but there is a 1975 Nolan Ryan on COMC right now from 2015.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

To me, these are worse than reprints. I'd rather scratch the foil off an old card and deal with the lower grade than to see the old card with foil on it.

If you are asking a question about collecting and the site then there isn't a dumb question. If you need to know then ask. Just saying

As far as I know, It all started in 2001, the 50th aniversary of Topps Baseball Cards, when then started "randomly inserting" original vintage Topps cards in packs. At that point they were not stamped with "resdiscover topps" or anything else, it was just original vintage topps cards, and a lot were in mint condition. At the tail end of the junk era, it was designed to be an incentive to get people back into the hobby. That is why 2001 packs, and especially unopened boxes are hard to find and sell at a premium. Imagine opening a pack and finding an orginal, mint Mantle card...

Actually, those of us that are older remember that Topps bought a complete run of it's cards back in 1991 and inserted them into 1991 Topps packs as part of their 40th anniversary. Please tell me I'm not the only one old enough to remember! :-)
For Rediscover Topps there hasn't been any sort if checklist issued, so nobody kniws which cards are stamped. They seem pretty random.
They did the same thing in Bowman this year, and issued Bowman buybacks with the 70th anniversary logo stamp.
Topps also did the same thing in 2015 and 2016 Archives, except they had the buybacks numbered and autographed, and sealed in magnetic holders. I real pain to track! I have the Olerud's listed in my website.

Buy backs are the only way I get new cards of some of the players I collect, so I'm ok with them.

I bought two retail 2007-08 OPC hockey a while back and they too have buybacks randomly inserted. The odds are 1:36 and I managed two with my first box. They are both 89-90 OPC, first was a Gretzky second was Geoff Courtnall. I looked in the Beckett and they don't even mention the buybacks in the 07-08 checklist. These cards do not have any indicators that they are buybacks in any shape or form so I gather that is why they are not listed. They are just a way to stuff packs with "extras" I guess. Anyone know if a standard buyback with nothing saying so gets listed any differently? Also, do they get added to that set as a Insert?
