It seems like the normal convention of naming sets on this site and elsewhere is Manufacturer followed by Brand Name. If it is the flagship set, then it just gets the Manucturer name. But why is it that we skip this convention with some sets and drop the manufacturer's name? For example, why isn't SPx named Upper Deck SPx, or UD Choice named Upper Deck UD Choice, or Ultra named Fleer Ultra? I could go on.
I think we've done it this way because Beckett did it this way. I think we should be better. Any thoughts?

I like that IDEA, and personally prefer it. I find it much easier to know that it's an UD or Fleer product.

For all the examples I listed, the manufacturer's name is clearly marked on the card and packaging.

Good memory Sportz, thanks for the links. Looks like the Fleer Ultra was a sore spot in the past. Sorry to bring it up again.

If I can add on to this in the reverse side, the 1985-1988 Leaf sets (released in Canada) all bear Leaf/Donruss in the title yet no where on the card, front or back do you see "Donruss". In fact, all of the Donruss sets have "Leaf" on them yet they don't bear the same designation. I always looked at it as a slight to Canadians.
Yes we have gone around the block several times on this issue. The most common reason to not change is the workload it would take to change all the sets needing this amendment.

Not a problem, but I forget about the distrinction sometimes when logging cards or looking for them and then I realize I'm looking in the wrong place.
By the way here's another one. https://www.tradingcarddb.com/Forum.cfm/Page/S/ID/214/?MODE=VIEW&ThreadID=3119 and I know it's been brought up with Donruss/Leaf, too.

All good points. All valid. But with a database so large, I have found myself many times saying, "this card or set has to be listed" by I can't find it. And much time wasted.
Bruno is right, maybe we should identify the maker, BUT the work involved is overwhelming. Certainly make it easier to track down an item. Has anybody thought of a key? If Donruss, search Triple Play, Diamond King, Leaf, Studio etc. ...then add the key to the site? Another 1 of my brainstorms, oh well, lol.

I had to keep checking the date and time stamps on the replies in this thread. Is it that time of year again? Ugh.
