Bob-
I agree there have been a few 'asks' about other collectibles in the forums that are typically followed up with clear reminders that this is the Trading CARD Database. I wanted to weigh in on your idea with my thoughts. First and foremost, I would not want to see all collectibles on this site. It is FAR too ambiguous. My mother-in-law collects Precious Moments dolls. My brother used to collect beer cans. My dad collected shot glasses. I used to have a bottle cap collection as a kid...and I just realized we were all drunks! J/K Not to mention penants, beanie babies, postcards, spoons, die cast cars, hats, buttons, political items, bobbleheads, etc. It is just WAY to big a task for my brain to comprehend.
Remember, ADMIN created this site 10+ years ago (which makes it nearly as old as Facebook). Admin thankfully decided to make it open to anyone to edit via crowd sourcing. It is a FREE website that many dozen or even a few hundred visit on a daily basis, spending hours every single day looking at. There is a lot of loyalty here and many thousand members, many of whom are extremely active. There are over 100 folks that have well over 14,000 points which shows how dedicated they are to updating the site regularly with checklists, scans, information etc. I REALLY hope and pray that ADMIN is making good money on this site so that there is never a temptation to sell out to a larger site like Beckett. I'm guessing it's not Zuckerberg money, but hopefully enough to keep away big offers. I love using the Transaction Manager and that may not have ever been a part of the original scope of the site when it was conceived, but it works wonderfully and the constant updates are fabulous. I don't want to ruin what we have here by dilluting it with collectibles. Your list of Pros and Cons in the original post seems more like your list of ideas, not a real list of Pros and Cons. I personally think the Cons FAR outweigh the Pros to have it done here
If a separate site is desired to track a person's collectibles, I say GO FOR IT! That is the American Way! See a need, fill a need, make some money on it! If you want to advertise here to bring people over to that site, fantastic! There are lots of places to add links to it: your signature, forums, your personal page here, etc.
Please remember, this is Admin's site. We are all here as long as Admin allows us to be here - and it is Free. The fact that we contribute via crowdsourcing has empowered some to take an ownership perspective, but it is not ours. It is copyrighted as The Trading Card Database, LLC. It is a business and I'll say again, I hope it is a long living and successful business that pays all the bills and then some for the owner. Many thanks to Admin and all who keep the lights on here and allow us a place to spend our time on a regular basis. It is not perfect, but it is about as perfect of a site as I could ever imagine existing when it comes to trading cards.
Thank you Bob for your passion on other collectibles and I hope your endeavor is just as successful as TCDB currently is the way it is.
