Didn't have this problem with sets in the 50s, 60s, 70s. Serial numbers are stupid. That said, when I am browsing sets for whatever reason and I see a Ripken, Jeter or Chipper Jones with no team, I update the team name because no research is necessary. These are not "my players". Just figured it wouldn't hurt.

Updating TEAMS is different than updating NOTES. As long as the team is correct, it's a help to have as many done as possible, even if it's only one here, one there. With the Notes, since they are easier to do in bulk (although with Admin's latest change, it's easier to skip these!), it's better to do the whole set, and not just one or two cards.
(And honestly, seeing a couple teams already done, usually is the impetus I need to finish off a small set.)

Oh, Find & Replace is my friend. I build Excel spreadsheets for fun. I've made them do some pretty amazing things (concatenate is very useful in some of these).
I'm not really talking about the Excel upload side. If I do a checklist for upload, I make every effort to get every detail in the notes (and everywhere else) correct before I ever upload.
I'm talking more about an already uploaded checklist. I go in to add an image to a card and see that, for example, some set that has base cards and MEM/JSY cards in the same numerical set. And the MEM cards are supposed to be SN but the base cards aren't. And the MEM cards aren't all the same total SN. And heaven forbid only SOME of them are actually AU.
So I'm looking at this list that basically has no info other than a card number and a name and then there's a bunch of non repetitive info (teams, notes) that isn't there.
tonym wrote: @j thats an easy fix- just get familiar w/ the editing functions on here and find the CL online at Carboard Connection, Beckett or someother site. You can add notes to the whole set like AU, MEM, SN25,, and if there are cards in there SN to 10, then do a Replace AU, MEM, SN2510 to AU, MEM, SN10 and it will only change them one's. Copy a small set to excel and practice with it, its the same features. (Find and Replace ALL). there are many newer sets that have about 15-20 different SN's within a single set- but once you get use to the editing functions, you can knock them all out in a cpl minutes

i love the concatenate and "text to column" features as well. saves ALOT of time! but...if you have the Permissions when you go to the set then insert sets, you'll see an "edit" hyperlink next to the insert name. This provides mass editing. Clicking on that will take you to that sub sets attributes and provide two more links: 1. Update all cardnums for this set and 2. Update all notes for this set.
By clicking on Update notes, you can change all or part of that one sets notes.IE: Change JSY to MEM or add AU or SN before what is already there, it provides a few different options to change what data is there. Only thing before changing something you need to check other sites for the CL and verify that sets criteria.. IE: MEM, SN, AU #'s etc etc

I apologize. I completely missed what you were trying to tell me. I just went in to update a Sign of the Times set and saw what you were talking about. Yes, that absolutely makes things easier!

I agree with most everything that has been said. I always try to update team names if they are missing and I know the player stayed with one team through his entire career or if it is obvious that the numbering system is by team. However, some card companies have a nasty habit of having different SN to within one parallel set. Some players could be numbered to 25 and others to 10, so there is a slight risk that you take if you SN# all the cards to the same number. Also, some sets especially Collectors Edge have cards limited to a certain number, but not serial numbered so what does one put in the notes field since there is often nothing on the back that indicated a SN it just 1 of 2000 (or whatever)?
Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Yes, that happens (different SN in a set). Hence the reason we're all asking people to do a little research. With the tools we have online, that info is readily found in less than 2 minutes.
If there is an announced print run, but no SN, then the cards are annoted with PRxxx (with xxx being the number of cards available). For example, the Star Co Nova promos. They were not serial numbered, but there were only 100 released, therefore all Star Co Nova promos should have "PR100" in the Note field.
