Seems the death of anyone who appeared on a card at one time, (which includes any athlete, almost every celebrity, and many politicians), is fast becoming the biggest topic on here. Now people are jumping to post deaths which are not even verified. This is getting to be a big turnoff for me personally. Almost a contest it appears to be the first to post about someone passing. Many read as hollow homages to people that existed and came to fame in a time that the posters weren't even around. I can understand someone posting about a passing of someone that had a special memory for them personally. I can read about them in the news section of the internet, or the newspaper. It is only a matter of time before our postings are about everyday news stories, politics, murders, wars, and the economy. I come to this site to get away from that and enjoy my hobby. I know this won't stop this from happening, and many will jump on me for pointing it out, but, sorry, that's the way I feel about it.

I had a user list on here, Athletes Who Died Tragically.  I didn't really think it was macabre, or offensive, but I don't keep it up, mainly because everytime I added someone, I was sent 10 or 20 more names that people thought I should add.  It got to be too much, so I quit doing it.

   I don't mind the In Memoriam section.  I know there was a big controversy when Charles Manson had a card listed.

    I think sometimes it's human nature for people to dwell on death, and negative things.  Lists such as top ten draft busts are just as popular as top ten best quarterbacks.

Personally, those are Forum threads that I don't even open and read. As you said, we hear about it on the news; that is enough as with most of them, I have absolutely no connection.

When I go through my old trading card sets (football, baseball) and look at all those names and faces (most of them NOT super star players) I always think.... is this guy dead yet?

So, yes, it is an inevitable thing, and we will be dead sometime too.  So I like remembering all those guys in pictures on my trading cards, at least for a moment.  Maybe someday somebody else will remember us as well.

The area on the TCDB home page is "In Memoriam".   People are free to comment on it and people are free to ignore it.   Most do not comment on it.     I have no problem with people saying something nice about a player, wrestler, actor whom they collected or admired.   I comment on some that somehow struck a chord with me.    I ignore others whom I really never knew, cared  or even heard about.

I don't think that was his point. The way I interpreted the original post (and forgive me if I'm wrong) is that nearly every time someone passes away, there is a forum thread made about the topic. We read about it and see it in media every day. The original point is that seeing a new thread for every single death becomes, well, an annoyance. And I, for one, would tend to agree with that. We don't need a thread every time someone passes. Sure, if it's someone that you have fond memories of watching or remember something in particular, by all means, share it. But a thread of "R.I.P" seven times really isn't doing anything.

Of course, there's the point that if you don't like it you can just skip over it, so I get that too...

The point of a posting when someone passes is about "doing anything".   Sure it isn't going to "do anything".   It simply enables a member to express his feelings about the deceased.    You don't have to read them.   It is similar to my feelings about card variations.   I have no use for them.   Others do and they should post whatever they want about it.     I choose to skip over those postings because they "don't do anything" for me.   This is a large community and everyone does not like the same things.
